Baseball Bounces Back With Pair of Crucial Atlantic East Wins Over Immaculata

IMMACULATA, Pa. -- The Marymount University baseball team earned two all-important Atlantic East Conference victories on Saturday afternoon as the Saints downed Immaculata University in a pair of contests to improve to 15-4 overall and 13-2 in conference action.

Game One

The Saints' bats came alive in the opening contest ad blasted Immaculata for 12 runs throughout the contest. Every batter in the starting lineup registered at least one hit while Bryce SmithAlex Lemery, and James DiGiulian all finished with two hits. Smith was a major source of MU's run production with four RBI. Bill Wojcik and Robby Cable each added two RBI to race past the Mighty Macs.

While MU's lineup battered Immaculata's arms, Drew Mead twirled a gem on the mound for the Saints. Mead went the distance on the bump and allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work. The senior fanned eight batters and gave up one walk to pick up his fourth win of the year.

MU got things started with a five-run first inning behind a pair of two-run singles from Smith and Cable. Lemery struck next for Marymount in the top of the fourth inning. The junior shot a double into left field that plated DiGiulian. Smith added another two runs two batters later with a triple to right-center. Ryan Lee wrapped up the inning with a double that plated Smith. Marymount put the game to bed in the next frame with a three-run outburst. Ryan Maylie walked in a run and Wojcik laced a two-run single into centerfield for MU's final runs.

Game Two

MU's offense stayed hot in the final game of the series which led to a massive 20-1 win over Immaculata. With the victory, the Saints moved into possession of first place on the Atlantic East leaderboard.

The Saints' bats were nearly unstoppable as they racked up 19 hits compared to just three from Immaculata. DiGiulian and Maylie led the way for the offensive outburst. DiGiulian went 4-for-5 with two RBI and four runs, while Maylie went 4-for-6 with five RBI. Maylie and DiGiulian's hit totals both represented career-highs. MU's monster display at the plate was rounded out by Lemery, who finished with a whopping six RBI and four runs scored.

Marymount jumped all over the Mighty Macs early and plated 10 runs over the first three innings. After a two-run homer from Lemery in the opening frame, Cable got a five-run second inning started with an RBI single. Lemery followed with a three-run double and Maylie polished off the inning with a double that plated Lemery.

Cable and Maylie put the game officially out of reach in the fifth inning. Cable launched a homerun over the left-field wall that made it an 11-1 game. Maylie powered another double into right-centerfield that plated three runs and gave the Saints an insurmountable 14-1 edge. MU tacked on runs in the final three innings of the contest to give the game its final scoreline.

On the mound, Stephen Gerade earned his first win of the season. The senior tossed five innings, struck out four, and allowed just one earned run. Jake Andrews and Clint Wheeler combined to allow no hits over the final 3.2 innings with three strikeouts apiece.

Marymount closes out the regular season on Saturday, May 8, in a doubleheader against Cabrini University. The first game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
