Baseball Sweeps No. 19 N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Bridgewater College baseball team swept a double header today vs. No. 19 N.C. Wesleyan winning 5-2 in game one and 4-0 in game two.

 Game One

 The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 5, N.C. Wesleyan – 2
  • Records: Bridgewater (1-1); N.C. Wesleyan (1-1)

 How It Happened

  • BC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a bases loaded walk. Kyle Carlson drew the walk and Brett Tharp scored.
  • The Eagles scored two more times in the second inning. Jarret Biesecker tripled to center field that scored Jacob Grabeel. Biesecker later came around to score and make it 3-0 on a sac fly from Tharp.
  • In Grabeel's next plate appearance, he stroke a double to left field scoring Kevin Navedo to make it a 4-0 game in the fourth inning.
  • N.C. Wesleyan battlled back scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Eagles tacked on another run in the sixth on a single from Biesecker, which was enough to get a 5-2 win.

 Match Notes

  • Biesecker went 2-4 with two RBI.
  • Grabeel went 3-3 with an RBI and scored twice.
  • Tucker Hrasky threw three shutout innings in relief earning the win and Tharp earned the save striking out two of three batters in his one inning of work.

Game Two 

The Basics

  • Final Score: Bridgewater – 4, N.C. Wesleyan – 0
  • Records: Bridgewater (2-1); N.C. Wesleyan (1-2)

 How It Happened

  • The action began in the top of the third when Hunter Clever ripped a solo homer to left field to put the Eagles up 1-0.
  • In the top of the fifth, Grabeel singled up the middle scoring Clever who reached on a triple. The next inning, Brandan Hartman singled through the left side scoring Jeffrey Snider to make it 3-0.
  • Grabeel later scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to stretch Bridgewater's lead to 4-0 and that was all they needed.

 Match Notes

  • Sophomore Reid Long went 5.0 innings giving up only one hit, walking one and striking out eight batters.
  • Brett Tharp pitched 2.0 innings in relief striking out three Bishops to earn his second save of the day.
  • Clever had two hits and scored twice.
  • Grabeel went 1-3 with an RBI and scored once.

 Up Next

  • The Eagles will return home for its home opener with a doubleheader on Saturday Feb. 19, against DeSales. Action is set for 11 a.m. with the second game scheduled to start at  2 p.m.
