FREDERICK, Md. - Strong pitching performances led the Blazers to their first win of the 2022 campaign against Penn State Altoona.
On the Mound
- Colby Childs started the second game and pitched a smooth four scoreless innings for the Blazers. He used his defense behind him allowing one hit, four walks and two strikeouts. He would get the game two win. Jack Martin followed right where Childs left off, throwing three scoreless innings, giving up only two hits while striking out seven.
- Dutch DeProspero got the start for game one. He went 3.1 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and one walk. He struck out two and took the loss. Kevin Nelson, Jr. pitched 2.2 innings, striking out four, allowing only one run on four hits.
At the Plate
- Joe Monteleone went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and two walks for the doubleheader.
- Jacob Saylor hit a double and recorded an RBI, going 3-for-6.
- Stephen Sommer finished the afternoon 2-for-5 with a walk. He scored three times.
PSU Altoona 9, Hood 4
- Jake Hillard singled up the middle in the first inning to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead. Grant Barberich reached on an RBI fielder's choice, scoring Corey Chamberlain to give Altoona a 2-0 lead.
- In the bottom half of the inning, Joe Monteleone singled to left field and Sommer came in to score from second to cut Penn State Altoona's lead in half.
- After a scoreless second inning, Altoona added two runs in the third inning on a Logan Margroum double to bring in Hillard and Chamberlain. Hood's Andrew Perkins ended the rally, throwing out a runner at home plate on a Garret Alauzen fly out.
- In the very next inning Penn State Altoona's lead grew to five making the score 6-1. Richard Carey doubled to lead off the inning and would score on a Grayson McClain RBI fielder's choice. The final run of the inning came on a Chamberlain single that drove in Phaly Moravek.
- The Blazers got back in the scoring column in the bottom half of the fourth inning, when Cristian Reyna scored on a groundout by Tyler Schwarzman to bring Hood back within four with a score of 6-2.
- After holding the Lions in the top half of the fifth, Sommer scored on a Saylor single to make it a three-run game.
- Penn State Altoona knocked in an insurance run in the sixth inning on a Hillard double, scoring McClain to post a 7-3 lead for the Lions.
- Moravek had a two-run double in the seventh to extend the lead to 9-3. Saylor and Monteleone hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the inning but Monteleone was stranded on second. .
- Monteleone was a perfect 3-for-3 for the Blazers, doubling, walking and driving in two.
- Saylor reached base three times, via a single, a double and a walk.
- Tristin Lockett pitched three innings, only allowing one run with sixth strikeouts and two walks.
- Kyle Glass threw the final four innings for the Lions to receive the win. The sophomore allowed three runs on four hits, and striking out three.
- Chamberlain led Altoona with two hits, two runs, and one RBI.
Hood 5, PSU Altoona 0
- The Blazers gave Childs all the run support he needed in the first inning, scoring three times. Sommer started the scoring when he stole third and came home when the throw sailed into left field. After a Saylor single, Alex Jenkins scored from third on a passed ball two score two quick runs. The Lions' third error of the inning scored when Sam Turner reached on a fielding error by Moravek, scoring Saylor to give Hood a 3-0 lead.
- Hood extended its lead to four on a Trey Baker sacrifice fly that brought in AJ Haines in the bottom of the second.
- Childs made it difficult for the Lions. After allowing the game's first two hitters to reach base, he retired 10 of the next 11 hitters he faced.
- The Blazers' Schwarzman doubled into the left field gap, driving in Turner to make the score 5-0.
- Jack Martin dominated the last three innings, allowing only two hits. He gave the Lions nothing to work with as the first-year struck out seven batters in relief to help lead the Blazers' to their first victory of the season.
- Sommer had two hits for Hood. Jenkins reached twice on a hit and a walk.
- Eli Wiles threw three innings for Altoona and struggled, allowing five runs on five hits and recorded zero strikeouts to receive the loss.
- McClain led the Lions with two of the team's three total hits.

- Hood gets their first win of the season to improve to 1-3.
- PSU Altoona starts the season 1-1.
