William Paterson Splits Pair at Stevens, 10-1 and 4-6

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (2-1) split a doubleheader at Stevens (3-2) Feb. 21, winning the first game 10-1 in seven innings before seeing its late comeback fall short during the night cap, 6-4.

 

GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Ducks scored their lone run of the game during the home half of the second, using a single, wild pitch and pair of errors.
  • WP got the run back in the top of the fifth, as senior second baseman Colin Lombardo was hit by the first pitch of the frame, senior center fielder Justin Grippo sacrificed him to second, and senior right fielder Vinnie Martin later delivered an RBI-single through the left side.
  • The Pioneers took the lead during the sixth. Graduate student first baseman Carson Weis sent a leadoff double to right center, sophomore shortstop Jake Lutz was hit by a pitch and Lombardo sacrificed the runners up a base, setting up Grippo's sac fly to center field.
  • William Paterson exploded for eight runs during its final at-bat. Weis singled in Carter, who had a base hit through the right side, Lombardo's bases-loaded hit by pitch forced across senior third baseman Chris Liriano, and Grippo singled in Weis. A later wild pitch plated Lombardo, and junior left fielder Elliott Hayward's grand slam finished the scoring at 10-1.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Yelin went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored, and Weis was 2-for-5 while adding a double, RBI and pair of runs scored. Hayward was 1-for-2 with the grand slam.
  • Junior Ian Metzger pitched the 7.0-inning complete game, scattering three hits and one unearned run while striking out four Ducks (1-0).

 

GAME TWO

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Grippo's one-out solo homer handed WP a 1-0 first-inning edge.
  • Stevens seized a 5-1 lead in the fourth, using two singles, a double and a grand slam.
  • Lombardo doubled to right-center field and Yelin put an RBI-single into center for a 5-2 score in the fifth.
  • A triple and double extended the Ducks' advantage to 6-2 during the home half of the fifth frame.
  • Freshman third baseman Ruven Pino cleared the fence in right center for a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Yelin finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Senior Jordan Manne tossed 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out three (0-1).
  • Freshman Nick Durso twirled 0.2 inning, surrendering two hits, three runs and a base on balls with one strikeout. Junior Dan Castaneda pitched 3.0 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Carter pitched the final 1.0 inning and struck out one of the three batters he faced.
