Washington, DC – Sophomore Jorden Jurkiewicz belted two homers and drove in four runs. Sam Angelo and Jason Moore each added four RBI as Montclair State allowed just one hit in a 19-0 victory over Catholic University on Saturday afternoon.
Junior lefthander Patrick Cuccurullo tossed six hitless innings as the Red Hawks (3-1) used three huge scoring innings to take the first of a three-game set with the Cardinals (2-2). The two teams meet in a doubleheader on Sunday, February 27, with the first pitch set for 11:00 am.
Scoreless through the first two innings, MSU plated five runs in the third. Ryan McKenna delivered the first with an RBI single to score Joe Norton and late came home on an error. Angelo made it 3-0 with a sacrifice fly, with Moore accounting for the final two runs on a double down the left-field line bringing Andrew Ollwerther and Michael Murphy.
The Red Hawks pushed the lead to double digits in the fourth with more runs. Murphy was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in the first run. Angelo cleared the bags with a three-run double to left-center. Moore followed with a two-run homer to left-center, making the score 11-0.
Montclair State exploded for seven runs in the seventh. Anthony Guarino had an RBI double with McKenna and Peter Cosentino, each driving home runs with base hits. Jurkiewicz launched the first of his two home runs, a three-run blast to left-center field. Jurkiewicz would homer again in the ninth inning for the final MSU run.
That was more than enough for the Red Hawks pitching staff as Cuccurullo (1-1) struck out five in his six innings to earn his first win of the season. Matthew Tiplady fanned four in his two innings of work before Nick Desiderio closed out the game with a scoreless ninth.
Moore finished 3-for-4 while Guarino and Angelo each went 2-for-3. McKenna and Norton collected two hits apiece as Montclair State recorded 15 in the victory.
