MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Neumann University baseball team opened the 2022 season with a 10-7 win over the Apprentice School on Monday.
Marcus White went 3-for-3 from the plate with two walks and two runs scored. Christian Diaz and Andrew Curran each also had three hits. Ryan Lopez and Shawn Vega each had two hits.
Nate Griffin made his Neumann debut on the mound and went 6.2 innings for the win. He allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out three.
Brennan Hatala went 1.1 innings. Kevin Wallace made his debut on the mound. Vic Mejia picked up his first collegiate save, finishing the ninth inning.
Neumann scored first in the third inning as Diaz doubled in Zach Ray. In the fifth inning, Diaz and Curran hit back-to-back solo homeruns for a 3-0 Knights lead. In the sixth inning, Nick Glebocki singled in White for a 4-2 game.
In the seventh, Neumann plated five runs. Diaz scored on a single by Marty Cortellessa. Vega then knocked in Glebocki and White. Lopez singled to score Vega and Colin Pollard and put the Knights up 9-2.
The Knights added an insurance run in the eighth when White and Curran completed a double-steal for Curran to score.
The Builders scored four runs in the ninth inning to pull within striking distance, but Mejia shut the door for his first save.
Neumann (1-0) will face Mary Washington tomorrow evening. First pitch is slated for 6:00 PM.
