MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Christopher Newport put ten runs across and the pitching staff struck out 15 batters in a 10-6 win over Hanover College on Tuesday afternoon as the Captains (6-4) opened up a three-game stretch at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The annual spring break trip opened with Conner Clark and Jonathan Fisher ripping seven hits combined and Scott Crosson extending his season's hit streak to double digits.

After becoming just the seventh player to reach 200 hits in program history last weekend, Clark wasted little time adding to that total with another four-hit day on Tuesday. Leading off for the Captains, Clark posted the 64th multi-hit game of his career while also stealing three bases and scoring twice.

At the other end of the lineup, Jonathan Fisher snagged his second multi-hit performance of the year by going 3-for-4 while hitting in front of Clark. Fisher scored three times and drove in a run as CNU pulled ahead 8-3 after six innings and held on for a 10-6 win.

Crosson was 1-for-4 with three runs batted in and picked up a base hit in his tenth consecutive game. He also had a base knock in his final four games of 2021 to run his hit streak overall to a team-best 14 games.

On the mound, sophomore Colby Shriner (2-1) started things off with three shutout innings while striking out six batters. Shriner worked out of trouble in all three frames by stranding six baserunners including an impressive effort in the second inning when he struck out back-to-back batters with the bases juiced.

The Captains rewarded their starting pitcher with a run scored in the bottom of the first inning when Clark singled and stole second. After advancing to third on a base hit by Crosson, Clark raced home on an RBI groundout by Justin Bowers.

A big inning came in the bottom of the fourth frame when CNU took advantage of free passes and scored six runs on three hits. Kyle Schofield walked and advanced to third on an error before coming into score on a sac fly by Bowers. Three straight walks by Kevin Mackmin, Daniel Elliott, and Jay Cassady set up Drew Caroline for a two-RBI single. The line would keep moving when Fisher plated a run and Clark loaded the bases with another single. That would bring up Crosson for an RBI groundout. Fisher then scored on a passed ball to wrap up the inning.

Taking a 7-0 lead after four, the Captains looked in control until Hanover rallied for three runs in the top of the sixth inning. The Panthers added a single run in the seventh and two more in the eighth to cut the lead to two with just four outs remaining, 8-6. With a runner in scoring position and two outs, the Captains called on Elliott to close out the win.

Elliott left the runner stranded with a quick strikeout to end the eighth and then CNU staked their closer to a four-run lead with two more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Fisher singled and stole second before scoring on a RBI knock by Clark. The all-time leader in stolen bases swiped two more bags in the bottom of the eighth to set up a sacrifice fly by Crosson for the final tally.

In the top of the ninth, Elliott induced a ground ball out before a single and a wild pitch. After that, he slammed the door with two batters down looking on strikes to finish out his second save of the season. Elliott was 1-for-3 at the plate with a walk while added 1.1 innings pitched, three strikeouts and no runs allowed on the mound.

CNU will return to action on Wednesday as they take on Cabrini at 11:00 a.m.
