HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior Ethan Currin (Toano) had two hits and three RBIs, and freshman Johnny Oates II (Chester) hit his first collegiate home run and triple with two RBIs in the first game, while junior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) collected two hits in the second game, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader against Washington and Lee University on Saturday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Senior Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach) gained the pitching win in the 7-3 opener, while junior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) took the mound setback in the 21-6 nightcap for the host Tigers (6-3, 1-1) against the visiting Generals (6-5, 1-1).

In game one, H-SC had seven runs on nine hits with no errors … scoring three runs in the first inning, one run in the fourth, two runs in the fifth and one run in the eighth. W&L scored three runs on 13 hits with one error … scoring three runs in the fifth inning.

Highlights for the Tigers in the opener included a run-scoring double in the first by senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicsville) (1-3, RBI), as well as a two-run single in the first by Currin (2-3, 3 RBIs). Freshman Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-2, RBI) added a perfectly-executed sacrifice (squeeze) bunt RBI in the fourth, scoring Boyce (0-4), who was coming home on the pitch. Currin added an RBI double in the fifth, before Oates (2-4, 2 RBIs) hit his RBI triple to plate Currin. Oates followed with his first collegiate home run in the eighth, a solo blast down the left field line.

Graziano (1-1) started and pitched the first 6.0 solid innings, scattering 10 hits and three runs, all earned, with seven strikeouts—tying his career-high—and two walks. Junior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with three strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, H-SC had six runs on 10 hits with four errors … scoring one run in the second inning, two runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth, one run in the eighth and one run in the ninth. W&L scored 21 runs on 27 hits with one error … scoring three runs in the first inning, three runs in the second, four runs in the third, two runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth and eight runs in the ninth.

Highlights for the Tigers in the nightcap included a run-scoring single in the second by senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) (1-4, RBI), an RBI single in the fifth by Karnes (1-3, RBI), a sacrifice fly RBI in the fifth by Oates (0-3, RBI), another sac fly RBI in the sixth from Masterson (1-3, RBI), a pinch-hit RBI double in the eighth by sophomore Cameron Shields (Scottsville) (1-1, RBI), as well as a pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth from freshman Christian Lancaster (Danville) (1-1, RBI). Boyce (2-4) had two hits and scored two runs for the Garnet & Grey.

Tappy (1-2) started and pitched the first 2.0 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs, six earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Junior Davis Ferguson (Rocky Mount) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with no strikeouts and one walk.
