WINCHESTER, Va. – The Keystone College baseball team dropped a 27-14 marathon decision to SUNY Oswego on the second day of the Mr. V Memorial Classic, hosted by Shenandoah University, Saturday afternoon at Bridgeworth Field.
The Giants fall to 1-4 and will wrap up the tournament tomorrow at 11 a.m. against the host No. 18 Hornets. The Lakers improve to .500 at 2-2. Keystone will continue to travel down south to Florida for their annual spring break trip, competing in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational from March 8-16.
Saturday's contest featured 41 runs and 40 combined hits, including 13 extra-base hits. Keystone was plagued by eight miscues in the field.
Crooked numbers were all over the box score for both teams, as Keystone plated five runs in the first followed by a five-spot by Oswego in the third. Keystone scored five in the seventh before the Lakers put seven more on the board in the ninth.
For the Giants, the one-two-three hitters of Derrick Cancel (Orlando, Fla./Chancery Charter), Chris Hadsall (Lehman, Pa./Lake Lehman), and JD Barrett (Moosic, Pa./Dallas) carried the weight offensively, as the trio went 6-for-14 with nine RBI and six runs scored.
Cancel finished 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBI at the leadoff spot. Hadsall went 3-for-5 with a run-scoring triple in the third while Barrett finished with four RBI, including a three-run bomb to right center in the bottom of the first.
Pedro Abreu (Bronx, N.Y./Santa Teresa) enjoyed a 3-for-4 day while Adam Kelly (Beach Lake, Pa./Honesdale) and RJ Gouldsbury (Throop, Pa./Mid Valley) had multi-hit outings. Vince Montone (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Township), Julio Acosta (Elizabeth, N.J./Hudson Catholic), Evan Fallwell (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino), and Bobby Pokorney (Margate, Fla./J.P. Taravella) all tallied base knocks.
For the Lakers, Ryan Enos had a monster day at the plate, going 6-for-7 with three homers, five RBI, and five runs scored. Oswego had seven players with multiple hits and six players with two or more RBI.
Nathan Hinkley (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Lucie West Centennial), Nick Termini (Clark Summit, Pa./Abington Heights), Nick Gravel (Sidney, N.Y./Sidney), Justin Weithorn (Boynton Beach, Fla./St. Santaluces), and Braden Green (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Fort Lauderdale) all pitched for the Giants, with Hinkley and Gravel combining for seven strikeouts.
