THE BASICS:

- The Lead: Behind a balanced offensive attack and just two hits allowed for the game, the MIT baseball team earned a 6-1 road win over UMass Boston in non-conference play at Monan Park. The Engineers held the Beacons to the fewest runs they have posted in the series since 2012.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Engineers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second as first-year Reed Tubbs (Pflugerville, Texas) led off the inning with a double down the left field line. After moving to third on an error, he later scored on a passed ball for the early 1-0 advantage. Senior Cory O'Shea (Glen Allen, Va.) came home on a fielder's choice to make it 2-0.
- MIT chased UMB starter Alex Amalfi in the top of the third and added a third run with sophomore Michael Finch (Brentwood, Tenn.) scoring on a wild pitch to push the edge to 3-0. The Beacons picked up a single run of MIT starter Adam Katz (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) in the third as Ethan Errera earned a one-out walk and later crossed the plate on an RBI groundout.
- The score remained that way until the top of the fifth when Finch homered to right to make it a 4-1 margin, followed by two runs in the top of the ninth for the 6-1 final. In the ninth, sophomore Teddy Schoenfeld (Boulder, Colo.) came home on a wild pitch, while junior Graham Cartwright (La Jolla, Calif.) scored on an RBI single up the middle by senior Nick Aiello (Freehold, N.J.).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Junior Kyle Sonandres (Torrance, Calif.) finished 3-for-4 at the plate, along with two hits each by Schoenfeld and junior Erik Anderson (Palos Verdes, Calif.).
- First-year Brian Rapanan (Gurnee, Ill.) earned the win for MIT to move to 1-0 on the season and he threw two three innings of one-hit relief with two strikeouts. First-year James Moore (Los Gatos, Calif.) pitched a pair of scoreless innings, followed by a hitless ninth from sophomore Saketh Gabbita (Ashburn, Va.) to wrap up the victory. Amalfi is now 1-1 overall for UMass Boston as he allowed four hits and two runs over two innings.

- MIT opens its home schedule on Tuesday, March 15th as the Engineers will host Rhode Island College for a 3:30 p.m. start at Fran O'Brien Field. This marks the first home game for the Engineers in 1,048 days, dating back to the 2019 NEWMAC Tournament.
