William Paterson Can’t Overcome WNEU, 10-4

DAVENPORT, FLA. – The William Paterson baseball team (8-5) couldn't overcome Western New England (5-1), 10-4, March 16 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • WP opened up a 1-0 first-inning lead when senior second baseman Colin Lombardo was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior left fielder Steve Yelin.
  • A two-run single handed the Golden Bears a 2-1 second-inning edge.
  • Yelin singled in Lombardo, who was hit by a pitch, to knot the score at 2-2 during the top of the third inning.
  • Five hits, including a pair of doubles, plated four WNEU runs for a 6-2 game after five frames.
  • A sixth-inning sac fly pushed the Golden Bears' advantage to 7-2.
  • Lombardo's solo shot to left center cut the deficit to 7-3 in the top of the seventh.
  • WP strung together a Vinnie Martin hit and error, a Jake Lutz base hit and a wild pitch, crossing the plate once during the top half of the eighth inning.
  • Five walks, a passed ball and an error scored three Western New England runners in the home half of the eighth.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Lombardo was 2-for-3 with a homer and three runs scored, while Lutz finished 3-for-3 and added a double. Yelin went 2-for-3 and chipped in two RBI and a sacrifice fly.
  • Junior Dan Castaneda gave up six runs on eight hits and one walk, striking out five during 5.0 innings as the starter (1-2).
  • Freshman Neel Telidevara went 2.0 innings and surrendered two hits, one unearned run and a walk with four strikeouts. Classmate Nick Durso was charged with one run and two walks allowed, and graduate student Jason Rivera dealt the final 1.0 inning while giving up two unearned runs and three walks with one strikeout.
