WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Worcester State played extra baseball for the second day in a row and again ended up with a winning result, as the Lancers collected a 4-1 victory over Endicott on Friday afternoon at Chain of Lakes Stadium.
Junior Alex Sorenti-Burns (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) hit a three-run home run to left field in the top of the tenth to break a 1-1 tie and push Worcester State to 4-5 overall. It was the first home run as a Lancer for Sorenti-Burns, who is 5-9 over his last two games with a double, a triple, a home run and four RBIs.
The Gulls (7-2), who are ranked as one of the top teams in New England, brought the tying run to the plate with a pair of two-out singles in the tenth, but freshman pitcher Jarret Morrill (Chelmsford, Mass.) struck out Caleb Shpur (East Canaan, Conn.) to lock down his first save of the season.
Worcester State took the lead with an RBI single to left field in the top of the second by Xavier Quezada (Providence, R.I.).
Endicott shortstop Matthew McKinley (Hudson, N.H.) led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a homerun down the left field line to tie the game at one.
Senior pitcher Joey Zawisza (Newington, Conn.) went six innings, allowing just five hits and one run while striking out two.
Endicott had a chance to walk-off with the win in the bottom of the ninth, an inning in which they had three hits, but Sean Whitney-Dutton (Leominster, Mass.) gunned down Nicolas Notarangelo (Taunton, Mass.) at home from left field and Cole Glassburn (Hopkinton, Mass.) got Robbie Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) to strike out swinging to end the inning.
Glassburn earns the victory (1-1) after throwing three innings of shutout ball.
Worcester State has one final game in Florida, and it's against another New England foe. The Lancers will take on Springfield at Lake Myrtle Sports Park tomorrow at 12:30 before heading back up north.
