Shortstop Devin Meeuwsen delivered a two-run single and three RBIs for the Hope College baseball team during a 6-5 loss to Benedictine University (Ill.) on Monday in Davenport, Florida.
The Flying Dutchmen are now 8-3 on the season.
Benedictine (4-3) scored the go-ahead run during the eighth inning on an RBI double from centerfielder Anthony Lenza off reliever Jake VanDam.
Meeuwsen (Rockford, Michigan / Grand Rapids Christian) opened Hope's scoring with a second-inning scoring that brought home rightfielder Robbie Stuursma (East Grand Rapids, Michigan / East Grand Rapids). The Flying Dutchmen trailed, 4-1.
Hope took a 5-4 lead with a four-run fourth.
After Stuursma and catcher Caleb Regan (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Byron Center) drew bases-loaded walks, Meeuwsen hit a two-run single to left.
Benedictine tied the score at 5-5 with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly.
Reliever Reece Crabtree (Reynoldsburg, Ohio / Reynoldsburg) suffered the loss despite throwing 3 ⅓ innings of one-run relief.
The Flying Dutchmen's next game is against Elmhurst College (Ill.) on Tuesday, March 23, at 10:30 a.m. in Auburndale, Florida.
