DAVENPORT, Fla. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team suffered a 3-0 setback to a strong Wisconsin Stevens Point team Tuesday afternoon at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

The loss drops W&J to 6-6 overall. Wisconsin Stevens Point improves to 6-1 in 2022.

The Pointers opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Baumann led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Aaron Simmons followed with a sacrifice fly to right to score Baumann.

W&J freshman starting pitcher Brandon Bastian () was able to limit the damage. Bastian escaped a bases loaded jam in the second by striking out Baumann looking.

The Presidents put a runner in scoring position in the third, fourth and sixth innings but could not push across the tying run.

W&J had its best scoring chance come in the top of the seventh. Peter Kalinski (Washington, D.C./Saint John's College) and Evan Sante (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) recorded back-to-back singles to open the frame. A sacrifice bunt by Scout Zaas (Powell, Ohio/Wellington School) pushed the runners to second and third with one out.

Roman Sansom (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) reached first base on a hit by pitch to load the bases. W&J suffered a bad break when Kalinski broke for the plate on a wild pitch and the ball bounced off the backstop right to the UWSP catcher, who tagged Kalinski out at the plate for the second out. Stevens Point was able to escape the threat with a ground out for the third out.

The Pointers tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run home run by Simmons, who recorded all three RBI in the game.

W&J put a runner on base in the eighth and ninth but were unable to score. Kalinski and Sante finished with two hits apiece to lead W&J offensively.

Florida native Mason Kolbe (Bradenton, Fla. / Out-of-Door Academy) shined in his return to the Sunshine State. Kolbe tossed 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits and striking out five.

W&J (6-6 overall) closes out its Spring Break trip against the College of Wooster on Wednesday, March 23. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
