VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Sophomore Lucas Burnette (Hurt) provided the game-winning RBI in the 10th inning to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 6-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball road win at Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday afternoon in Virginia Beach. Freshman Matthew Arnold (Danville) had four hits and one RBI on the day, and senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) added one hit and two RBIs, while senior Kieran Conway (Chesapeake) gained the pitching win in late relief for the visiting Tigers (12-5, 5-2) against the host Marlins (10-8, 2-3).

H-SC scored six runs on 16 hits with no errors … scoring four runs in the second inning, one run in the eighth and one run in the decisive 10th. VWU scored five runs on seven hits with two errors … scoring one run in the second inning, one run in the third, two runs in the fifth and one run in the ninth to force the extra inning. The Tigers have now won six games in a row overall, including four-straight ODAC games.

Highlights for H-SC included the extra inning when the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs before Burnette (2-2, RBI) provided his clutch sacrifice fly RBI to center field to score freshman Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (1-4), who had singled to open the at-bat, with what proved to be the winning run. Earlier in the game, it looked like junior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) (2-5, RBI) might have provided the game-winner when he delivered a one-out, RBI single to right field that also plated Chambers for a 5-4 advantage at the time.

The Garnet & Grey had scored four runs in the second inning, getting a run-scoring RBI infield single from freshman Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (2-2, RBI), a two-run single down the left field line from Badin (1-5, 2 RBIs), and an RBI single to center field from Arnold (4-6, RBI)—providing an early 4-0 margin. Freshman Johnny Oates II (Chester) (2-5) also had two hits in the contest.

Conway (1-0) garnered his first win of the season with the final 1.1 shutout innings, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks. Freshman Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) started and pitched the first 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with three strikeouts and two walks. Junior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) was among four pitchers for the visitors, tossing 2.2 innings, allowing one hit and one run, earned, with five strikeouts and one walk.

H-SC will next play on the road at ODAC opponent Guilford (NC) College on Saturday, March 26, a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina. Please be sure to check our website at hscathletics.com for the latest weather-related schedule adjustments.
