PURCHASE, N.Y. – A four-run eighth inning lifted the William Paterson baseball team (12-6) to a 4-1 victory at Keystone (6-11) March 24.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A single, double and error allowed the Giants to break the scoreless tie with one unearned run during the bottom of the sixth inning.
- The Pioneers scored all four of their runs during their second-to-last at-bat. Senior Justin Grippo opened the frame with a pinch-hit double, and senior shortstop Chris Liriano sacrificed him to third. Senior third baseman Colin Lombardo followed with an RBI-double, and after a flyout and an intentional walk issued to senior catcher Steve Yelin, senior right fielder Dan Carter delivered an RBI-single through the left side. Senior designated hitter Dylan Habeeb and junior center fielder Elliott Hayward added consecutive run-scoring base hits for a 4-1 edge.
- With the potential tying run at the plate, junior Darmany Rivas came on to record a strikeout to end the bottom of the eighth. A single and walk again brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but a strikeout and groundout double play ended the game.
