WORCESTER -- The WPI baseball team kept its win-streak alive with an 8-4 victory over New England College on Friday evening on the campus of Clark. The Engineers have now won seven-straight games over the last 11 days.
WPI combined for 11 hits in the victory. Scott West (Durham, DC) got the start on the mound pitching the first half of the game going 4.2 innings, allowing four runs off of four hits and striking out five batters. Joseph Peregrim (Watervliet, NY) closed out the game pitching the final 4.1 innings of play allowing just two hits, and no runs while striking out six in picking up the win.
Three different Engineers netted two hits in the game while Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA), Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, NY), and Joe Salvon (Longmeadow, MA) each blasted roundtrippers in the victory.
New England College (6-8) was held to just six hits with JD Normand (Auburn, NH) leading the way with a 2-for-4 outing, batting in a run. Starting pitcher Shaun Cormier (Rochester, NH) earned the loss, giving up eight runs in 5.2 innings of action, though he struck out nine Engineers.
WPI got on the board first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Cash got the scoring going shot out of the park, followed by a double to center from Hand, to drive home Kyle Johns (Milltown, NJ). NEC got one back in the top of the third, but the Engineers responded in the bottom half of the fourth inning thanks to back-to-back homers from Hand and Salvon to make it a 5-1 ball game.
New England College put together a three-run top of the fifth, but that would be it for the Pilgrims, as Peregrim shut them down the remainder of the game.
A three run sixth inning for WPI, with the scoring started by a two-run triple from DJ Brooks (Danvers, MA), while a passed ball later in the inning brought home the third, creating a solid buffer for Engineers as they advanced on to the victory.
WPI will look to keep its winning ways going with a Noon doubleheader at Wheaton on Saturday, April 2 while the Pilgrims are back in action, also on Saturday, with a doubleheader hosting Lesley beginning at 1pm.
