BROCKPORT, NY – The SUNY Brockport baseball team is off to its best start in program history with an 18-2 start and currently a 16 game winning streak, the second-longest active winning streak in all of college baseball behind Division 1 Tennessee (20), as they head into a weekend series at SUNY Cortland (19-6).
Brockport is currently receiving 29 votes in the baseballnews.com poll and 13 votes in the D3baseball.com poll. Cortland is currently ranked as the No. 6 best team in the country according to D3baseball.com and the No. 12 best team in the country according to baseballnews.com.
The first game of the three-game weekend series will kick off at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 8th in the first game of a doubleheader. Tomorrow's second game will begin 30-minutes following the final out of game one. Game one of the doubleheaders will be played as a nine-inning game with game two a seven-inning game. Saturday's game three's start time is still to be announced.
The last time these two teams faced off was in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament which saw the Red Dragons defeat Brockport in two games to conclude the Golden Eagles 2021 season.
Last Game Recap: The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning following Pastore's two-RBI single to right field which scored O'Dair and Houlahan. Pastore has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games and he has five RBIs over the course of his last three outings.
RIT got two back in the fourth, but the Golden Eagles responded right back with three more runs in the top half of the fifth inning to push its lead back to 6-2. Brockport's three-run fifth was sparked by a two-RBI single to center field from Eldred which scored Pastore and Voight.
RIT's final rally came in the seventh inning as the home team plated three more runs to make it a tight 6-5 ball game.
All-time home run leader Tom Kretzler added another long ball to his ledger for the 26th of his career and also scored three runs to surpass Brockport Hall of Famer John Morgan as the program's career record holder for runs scored with 129.
NCAA Stat Leaders: Along with the team having the second-longest active winning streak in all of college baseball, the Golden Eagles as a team have a Division III lowest ERA (1.55), WHIP (0.98), and hits allowed per inning (6.46). They have the second-best win-loss percentage (.900) along with the third-most shutouts in all D-III baseball (5). The team has the sixth-fewest walks allowed per nine innings (2.37) and the tenth most strikeouts per nine innings (10.9).
Andrew Huffman is still tied for the lowest earned run average across D-III baseball as he holds a 0.00 ERA through 32.1 innings pitched this season. Matt McGowan is ranked 27th on the lowest national ERA list as he holds a 1.16 ERA which is the third-best in the SUNYAC and Tom Kretzler's 2.02 ERA puts him as the fifth-best pitcher in the conference.
Looking at Cortland: The Golden Eagles will look to slay two Red Dragons in the span of two-weekend series following Brockport's 3-0 series sweep over Oneonta this past weekend. Zack Durant rivals Andrew Huffman for the best starting pitcher in all of Division III baseball. Durant holds a 0.00 ERA through 26.2 innings pitched. He has given up 11 hits and only one unearned run while walking 10 batters and striking out 20 batters while allowing three doubles. Anthony Fusco has pitched the most innings this season and holds a 1.46 ERA through 37.0 innings. He has allowed 27 hits, 12 runs, six earned runs, nine walks, and struck out 21 batters. Ryan Flansburg has thrown 31.1 innings this season and holds a 3.73 ERA in eight appearances. During that time, he's allowed 29 hits, 16 runs, 13 earned runs, and 11 walks while striking out a team-high 31 batters.
At the plate, Chris Bonacci in 21 appearances holds a .387 batting average through 31 at-bats. He's recorded 12 hits, 10 runs, two doubles, and two RBIs so far. Andrew Michalski who's started in all 24 games for the Red Dragons this year has recorded 25 hits in 67 at-bats for a .373 batting average. He's recorded 15 runs and 14 RBIs. Matt Bruno and Danny Coleman are tied for the most home runs for Cortland this season as each has recorded six dingers this season.
What's Ahead: After Brockport's weekend series with SUNY Cortland, the Golden Eagles will travel to Wells College in Aurora, NY for a non-conference game against the Express. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13th with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
