POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Union College baseball head coach Paul Mound became the all-time wins leader in program history on Tuesday in the team's 9-5 win over Vassar College to clinch the series at Prentiss Baseball Field.

With the win today, Mound earned his 227th win as head coach of the Union baseball program, surpassing the previous record of 226 set by Art Lawrence set over 35 seasons (1939-42, 1946-76). Union's active leader in coaching victories, Mound's win total ranks him sixth all-time among all Union coaches for victories in a single sport.

Senior Chris Murdock was excellent on the mound, pitching five complete innings, fanning five, and only surrendering one run on three hits. Junior Jack Davis had a huge day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored.

After a scoreless first inning, the Dutchmen plated three in the second to take a 3-0 lead. With two runners on, sophomore Anthony Ruzzo drove in Union's first run of the day on a single to right field. Sophomore Sebastian Pike capitalized on a wild pitch to make it a two-run game and a fielding error on a single by senior Jack DiNanno gave Ruzzo time to scamper home for the 3-0 lead.

Union plated runs in the next four innings to take an 8-2 lead going into the eighth. In the third, first-year Sam Strazza led off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring off a double by Davis. One inning later, sophomore Kobe Mentzer launched an RBI triple into center field and scored three batters later on a sac fly.

The Brewers broke through the Union defense with a solo homerun in the fourth inning. The Dutchmen regained a six-run lead in the top of the fifth when sophomore Thomas Parisi drove an RBI double into left center to make it 7-1. The sixth inning was all junior Jono Santos as he opened the frame with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on an error.

Vassar added their second run of the game on a sac bunt in the sixth frame. After a scoreless seventh innings, the Brewers found new life in the eighth, scoring three runs to close the gap. Leading 8-4 with bases loaded and one out, junior Jason Goldblum entered the game and slammed the door, striking out two of the three batters he faced to close out the inning.

Union added one more run in the ninth with an RBI-single by Davis while Goldblum struck out two and the Union defense locked down to end the game on a fielder's choice to take the 9-5 victory.

The Dutchmen will travel to Bard College on Friday for a single nine-inning game beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Honey Field.
