#6 Cortland Takes Pair from Plattsbugh; Flansburg Tosses Shutout in Game 2

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Ryan Flansburg (Queensbury) tossed a four-hit shutout as nationally sixth-ranked Cortland defeated visiting Plattsburgh, 4-0, in a seven-inning contest to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Cardinals. The Red Dragons won the opener, 9-2, as Anthony Fusco (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown) and two relievers combined to allow only five hits over nine innings.
 
Cortland (24-7, 10-1 SUNYAC) and Plattsburgh (10-11, 0-5 SUNYAC) are scheduled to complete their three-game series Saturday at noon at Wallace Field.

Fusco improved to 6-1 on the spring after giving up four hits and a walk and striking out five in six and a third innings. He was charged with two runs allowed. Mike Hennessy (Stony Brook/Smithtown East) permitted one hit and struck out one in an inning and two thirds and James LaBruno (Oceanport, NJ/Shore Regional) walked one batter in a scoreless ninth inning.
 
Antonio Pragana (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) went 4-for-5 with two RBI as part of Cortland's 12-hit attack. Andrew Michalski (Buffalo/St. Francis) was 2-for-5 with two RBI, Scott Giordano (Croton-on-Hudson/Croton-Harmon) homered and walked, Nick Chemotti (Warners/West Genesee) finished 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs, and Danny Coleman (Saratoga Springs) walked twice and drove in two runs.
 
Cortland scored in the first on Coleman's sac fly and added three in the second on RBI singles by Pragana and Michalski and a Coleman bases-loaded walk. A Pragana RBI infield single and a Michalski RBI single in the third extended the lead to 6-0.
 
Plattsburgh scored its two runs in the top of the fifth. Alex Kornblau walked and Nick Cergol and Christian Ott each singled to load the bases. Ott finished the game 2-for-4. A Mike Rasquin fielder's choice drove home a run, and a wild pitch on a strikeout allowed the second run to score.
 
Cortland finished the scoring with three in the bottom of the sixth. Giordano led off with a homer to right center. James Varian (Hopewell Junction/Trinity-Pawling) singled and scored two batters later on a Mat Bruno (Rye) triple, and Bruno scored on Matt Funk's (Pine Plains) RBI groundout to short.
 
Plattsburgh starter Justin Osborn allowed eight runs, seven earned, in five and a third innings. Ryan Nista gave up a run in an inning and two thirds and Gabe Mounkhall tossed one scoreless inning.

Flansburg, now 4-1 on the year, allowed only four hits, didn't walk anyone and struck out three for the seven-inning shutout. Plattsburgh starter Kolby Mordecki allowed three hits, a walk and a run in just a third of an inning. Chris Santic went the rest of the way for the Cardinals and gave up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
 
Cortland notched single runs in each of the first two innings. In the first, Pragana walked, Michalski singled, a fielder's choice put runners on first and third, with a throwing error during the play allowing Pragana to score. In the second, Hunter Holliday (Camden) led off with a double, was bunted to third by Ben Rhodes (Amsterdam) and scored on Chris Bonacci's (Syracuse/West Genesee) sac fly to right.
 
The Red Dragons added two runs in the fifth when Pragana led off with a walk and Coleman hit a two-out, opposite-field homer to left for his 10th round-tripper of the season. Coleman, Varian and Holliday each finished the game 2-for-3 and Pragana drew two walks and scored twice.
 
Plattsburgh's best scoring chance came in the second. Conner Gonzalski was hit by a pitch, Christian Lent reached on a bunt single and Ott's sac bunt put runners on second and third. Flansburg got the next batter to hit into a fielder's choice, with Gonzalski thrown out in a rundown between third and home, and a groundout ended the inning.
