CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland overcame an early four-run deficit and put the game away with seven runs each in the seventh and eighth innings as the nationally sixth-ranked Red Dragons outslugged Plattsburgh, 22-13, throughout constant rainy and cold conditions to close out a three-game sweep of the visiting Cardinals.
Cortland (25-7, 11-1 SUNYAC) won for the 13th time in its last 14 games. Plattsburgh fell to 10-12 overall and 0-6 in the league.
Shane Mugnolo (Howard Beach/Xaverian) earned the victory in relief, allowing one earned run over four and two thirds innings after entering the game in the second inning. He allowed six hits - three in the second and three in the sixth - and finished with three strikeouts and three walks.
The Red Dragons finished with 20 hits. Danny Coleman (Saratoga Springs) was 4-for-6 with two doubles, five RBI and three runs scored. Mat Bruno (Rye) went 3-for-5 with a triple, double, RBI and three runs and Scott Giordano (Croton-on-Hudson/Croton-Harmon) was 2-for-4 with two walks, two RBI and three runs. James Varian (Hopewell Junction/Trinity-Pawling) was 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI and Antonio Pragana (Hopewell Junction/John Jay) finished 2-for-5 with two runs.
Ben Rhodes (Amsterdam) hit his first homer as a Red Dragon and ended the day 1-for-3 with two walks, three RBI and two runs. Matt Funk (Pine Plains) was 1-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs, and Hunter Holliday (Camden) went 1-for-2 with two RBI after entering late in the game.
Plattsburgh was led by Steve Messerschmitt, who was 3-for-5 with a double, walk, four RBI and two runs, and Alex Kornblau, who finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and four runs. Kaden Kowalowski contributed a 2-for-5 performance with two runs as the Cardinals ended the game with 13 hits. Plattsburgh starter Sean Malamud allowed six hits and six runs in four and a third innings with a strikeout and a walk.
Plattsburgh struck for two runs in the first on a Christian Ott sac fly and an Andrew Veit RBI single, and increased the lead to 4-0 in the second on back-to-back RBI singles from Kornblau and Messerschmitt. Cortland halved its deficit in the bottom of the second on a Bruno one-out double and a Rhodes two-run homer down the right field line. The Red Dragons tied the game in the fourth on Bruno's RBI triple and Funk's RBI groundout.
Cortland posted three runs in the fifth to take a 7-4 lead. Coleman and Varian hit back-to-back RBI singles with one out and, following an error, Funk hit a sacrifice fly to center. The Cardinals pushed home two runs in the sixth to pull within a run on a Messerschmitt two-out, two-run single.
Cortland scored on a failed pickoff attempt in the sixth to go up 8-6. The Red Dragons took control with a seven-run seventh that featured a Rhodes bases-loaded walk, Holliday's pinch-hit two-run single, a Giordano RBI single and a Coleman two-run double during an 11-batter inning.
The guests got back to within 15-9 with three in the top of the eighth, but Cortland sent 13 batters to the plate, including eight pinch hitters, in a seven-run bottom of the eighth. Nick Chemotti (Warners/West Genesee) singled in a run, Giordano walked with the bases loaded, Coleman hit his second two-run double of the contest, Mitchell Kelly (Webster/Webster Thomas) drove in a run with a sac fly and Luke Schartner (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) added an RBI single to account for most of the damage.
Plattsburgh closed the scoring with four runs in the ninth in an inning that featured four walks, a hit batter and an error but no hits.
Cortland will host Rochester, currently 24-4, in a non-league game Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
