Baseball: Highlanders Surpass Single-Season Wins Record, Increase Program-Record Win Streak to Nine Games

More news about: Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team won, 15-11, at home against non-conference opponent Gwynedd Mercy University on Thursday evening, marking their ninth-straight victory and setting the program record for wins in a single-season with their 21st triumph of the 2022 campaign. Cairn's current nine-game winning streak is the longest win streak in the history of the program (official win-streak records date back to 2004).

"Our guys are very excited to have broken the single-season wins record." Remarked first-year Head Coach Brett Marks. "Everyone on our team has worked hard to get to the point we are at. This group of young men is very talented and they know this is just the beginning for our program."

Gwynedd Mercy (14-16, 7-5 Atlantic East) struck first after tallying a run in the top of the first inning, before Cairn (21-11, 6-4 CSAC) responded with three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a two-run homer down the left-field line by graduate student Brian Amantia Jr. (Columbus, NJ / King's Christian). The Highlanders held a 5-2 advantage after four innings before the Griffins reclaimed the advantage following four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead. The Highlanders once again responded with a five-spot in the bottom half to take a 10-6 lead and blew the game open in the seventh frame with another five-run inning to put away the contest.

Cairn was led offensively by Amantia with two hits and a game-high five RBIs. Amantia's two-run homer in the first inning marked his eighth home run of the season, and the graduate senior is just one home run away from tying the single-season home run record held by Caleb Lang '16. Amantia was followed by junior Samuel Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) who also notched a pair of hits and runs scored, including a solo-shot in the fifth inning. Highlander senior Joshua Melchior (Boyertown, PA / Valley Forge Baptist Academy) added three hits and three runs scored, both game-highs. Freshman Ronaldhino Alcin (Miami, FL / North Miami Beach HS) picked up his second win of the season after turning in five innings on the bump, scattering five hits, six runs (two earned) and striking out three.

Cairn will be back on the diamond on Saturday, April 23 when it makes its long-awaited return to Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play against Rosemont College for a conference doubleheader at home inside the Stillman Complex starting at 12 p.m.
