Alexander ties record as starting pitching keys sweep of Albright

On the Mound

  • Alexander struck out 11 in a complete game win in game one. He allowed one run on three hits. The 11 strikeouts junior tied Kole Hearn's performance against Central Penn in 2015 for most strikeouts in a game for a Blazer.

  • Three pitchers combined to strike out 13 hitters in game two. Jack Martin started game two for Hood, allowing one run on five hits in six innings of work. He struck out seven while only walking two, and received the win.

  • Joe Monteleone struck out five in two innings of work out of the bullpen, allowing one run.

  • Ryan McCreedy pitched the ninth inning and gave up one run on one hit. He struck out one.

At the Plate

  • Tyler Schwarzman led Hood at the plate over the two games, going 5-for-6 with a double and two RBIs. He scored four times and had two stolen bases on the afternoon.

  • Jacob Saylor recorded four RBIs on a three-hit day.

  • Alex Jenkins scored twice and had an RBI, going 3-for-5 in game two of the doubleheader.

  • AJ Haines scored two times and had two stolen bases in game two. 

Hood 4, Albright 1

  •  Over the first five innings, Alexander and Albright starting pitcher Dan Stofko dominated the two offenses with the two lineups combining for just three hits. 

  • Albright got on the board in the first inning, scoring it's only run of the game to take an early lead. Roman Berretta was knocked in on a single through the right side of the infield by Will Algard.

  • Alexander allowed another hit in the second and another in the fourth, but did not allow a hit over the final five innings. He struck out at least one hitter in eight of the nine innings. The junior's defense backed him up after committing errors in each of the first two innings, turning double plays to end the inning in both the fourth and ninth.

  • Stofko baffled the Blazers until Schwarzman broke up the Lions' no-hit bid in the fifth inning with a lead off single up the middle. He later scored on a wild pitch by Stofko that would tie up the game 1-1.

  • The Blazers took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Schwarzman again was the spark at the plate that Hood needed with another single up the middle. He stole second during Nick Rampone's at-bat and  Rampone drove him in with a single down the left field line.

  • Hood got some insurance runs in the eighth inning to  secure the win. Matthew Stout was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning  and Sam Wheeler hit an infield single to put pressure on the defense. Saylor hit a two-out single into left field that scored both Stout and Wheeler to put the Blazers up 4-1.

Hood 6, Albright 3

  • The Blazers were the ones that jumped out in front in the first inning in game two. Jenkins led off the game with an infield single up the middle and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by Schwarzman. Matt Schopf knocked in Jenkins on a hard line drive into the right field gap as Hood took a 1-0 lead. 

  • Jenkins again led off with a single in the third. Schwarzman hit a double into the left field gap during the next at-bat to put two runners in scoring position. Saylor scored both runners on a single through the left side to put Hood up 3-0. 

  • In the bottom of the fourth, Haines started the inning with a single up the middle. He later scored from third on a Jenkins two out single through the left side of the infield. The Blazers' lead was extended to 4-0, ultimately putting the game out of reach. 

  • Lead off singles were the name of the game in game two for the Blazers. Schwarzman caught the Lion defense out of position, and put down a perfect bunt to start the bottom of the fifth. Hood kept playing small-ball as Saylor bunted and Schwarzman advanced all the way to third with some heady baserunning. . A Schopf sacrifice fly put Hood up 5-0 as Schwarzman came home on the play. 

  • Martin's shutout was spoiled when Albright got on the board in the sixth inning. Eddie Meredith led off the inning with a double into right center field, and later scored on an Algard groundout.

  • Hood's last run of the game came in the sixth inning as they went ahead 6-1. Haines was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved over to third on a wild pitch. Cristian Reyna hit a two out single to right field that brought Haines home.

  • Albright loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth innings but Monteleone and McCreedy were able to limit the damage. Monteleone nearly escaped the eighth but Nick Sklenarik scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning. The Lions managed to get the winning run to the plate in the ninth inning, pulling within 6-3 when  Sklenarik singled through the right side that scored Gilmer from second. McCreedy struck out Algard to put an end to the comeback bid.

For the Opponent 

  • Algard had an RBI and two walks, going 2-for-2 at the plate in game one for the Lions.

  • Sklenarik scored once in game two, going 3-for-4, with an RBI and a walk.

  • Meredith hit a double in game two, and went 2-for-4 at the plate. 

  • Stofko started game one for the Lions, allowing four runs on seven hits in 7.2 innings. He had four strikeouts and a walk, taking the loss.Connor Trower recorded the final out in the eighth inning.

  • Hayden Paukstis got the start in game two, giving up six runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings. He took the loss, striking out one. 

  • John O'Conner threw 2.1 scoreless innings, giving up only three hits and striking out two.  

Notes

  • Hood improved to 10-24 overall and 3-9 in the MAC Commonwealth on the year.  

  • Albright falls to 1-31 and 0-12.
