New London, CT --- It was a battle right until the end in both games of the doubleheader between the WPI baseball team and Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon. The Bears took game one of the day with an extra-innings affair that lasted 10 innings and saw Coast Guard come out on top 8-7. A two-run eighth inning was the deciding factor in a 3-2 victory for the Engineers. 

WPI (14-15, 4-9 NEWMAC) took the series from Coast Guard with the game three victory after winning Friday night's opener 3-0 in Worcester. 

The Engineers were able to even the score in the top of the eighth inning in game-one to force extras, but a Nate Nam (Cypress, CA) single to centerfield with bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th brought home John Carroll (Yardley, PA), who had gotten the Coast Guard (17-11, 8-5) offense going in the inning with a single to right. 

In the night cap, a single to left field from Dylan Connors (Westboro, MA) brought home the game-tying and the game-winning runs as DJ Brooks (Danvers, MA) and Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, NY) crossed the plate to give WPI the eventual victory. 

Martin McCormack (Quincy, MA) went 2-for-4 in game one, scoring a run for the Engineers, while Andrew Brooks (Millis, MA) was 3-for-6 in the game with a run scored. Hand ended game one with a 2-for-5 effort, driving in three runs and scoring another. Game two saw a 2-for-4 effort from Connors who finished with the two RBIs while Hand drove in the first run of the game. 

For Coast Guard, leadoff hitter Nam put together a 3-for-6 effort in game one scoring a run and driving another in. Jack Steel (Medford Lakes, NJ) finished the day with a 3-for-6 outing, driving in two and scoring another run. Nam was 1-for-2 in game two, reaching base three times in the day after drawing a couple walks and came around to score once. Wyatt Duthu (Madison, AL) scored Coast Guard's other run of the game as the Engineers pitching staff held Coast Guard to just two hits in the outing. 

Coast Guard reliever Aidan Andersen (Waukesha, WI) came away with the game one win pitching the final three innings of relief, allowing two hits and a run to move to 2-0 on the year. In game two, Engineer starter Alexander Mondro (Westford, MA) moved to 1-0 on the year after pitching eight complete innings, allowing just two runs off of two hits and striking out five. Ryan Malkowski (Hubbardston, MA) closed out the game in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning to pick up his first save of the year. 

WPI got the scoring going first in the first game of the day putting up a run in the third inning before Coast Guard recorded seven unanswered runs to gain a 7-1 lead after the sixth inning of action. But the Engineers never backed down, putting up two runs in the seventh as a Hand single to center scored Andrew Brooks, later scoring on a wild pitch to make it a 7-3 ball game. 

In the eighth, the Engineers threw together a four-run inning as a throwing error off of an Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) hit to third base with bases loaded brought home two runs. A Hand single to right then evened the score before the Nam game-winner in the 10th. 

In game two, Coast Guard put up two quick runs in the first inning, before the pitching of Mondro shut the Bears down for the remainder of the game. WPI got one run back in the sixth inning thanks to a Hand double to centerfield that brought home Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ) before the eighth inning heroics from Connors. 

WPI will look to keep the momentum going on Tuesday afternoon when they face MIT on the road in Cambridge at 3:30pm while Coast Guard heads to Norton, MA for a Tuesday afternoon outing at Wheaton also at 3:30pm.
