CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (May 7, 2022) - The Buena Vista baseball team rallied back after dropping an 11-3 contest in game one of a doubleheader at Coe College on Saturday afternoon by pulling away late in game two for an 11-6 triumph. The victory gave the Beavers the outright American Rivers Conference regular season title - its first since 2014.
Grant Oseka doubled home a run in the first inning of game one to give BVU an early lead but it wound up being all Kohawks from there. Coe responded with three runs in its half of the first to take a 3-1 lead before adding another in the third and two more in the fourth to build a 6-1 cushion. BVU was able to get back as close as 6-3 in the fifth after a Joel Garcia homerun, but Coe added the final five runs en route to the 11-3 victory.
Garcia also doubled and was the only Beaver with multiple hits. He finished with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. Morgan Smith was tagged for six runs and eight hits over his four innings of work to suffer the loss.
The nightcap was back-and-forth in the early going before BVU pulled away over the final four innings to break a 6-6 tie.
Zack Beekmann had a two-run home run in the first inning that highlighted a three-run frame for BVU as the Beavers led 3-2 after one inning. After BVU extend the margin to 4-2, the Kohawks plated three in the third to take their first lead at 5-4. With the game tied at 6-6 in the sixth, Logan Mueller doiubled home a run to give BVU the lead back before Garcia reached on an error resulting in an RBI. The team then added another run in the eight before Kyler Corcoran came through with a big two-run single up the middle in the ninth to make it an 11-6 cushion.
Mason Gehling went the final 4.2 innings in relief of Dalton Glenn to earn the win. He didn't allow a run on three hits and struck out five.
Evan Taylor was 4-for-5 in the contest, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. He drove in a run and scored three times. Corcoran and Mueller each had two hits and two RBI while Beekmann drove in three.
Buena Vista now sits at 25-12 overall and will wrap up the regular season with Sunday's series finale. The American Rivers Conference Tournament will get underway on Thursday, May 12, at Veterans Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
