STAUNTON, Va. – Senior Ethan Currin (Toano) had five hits, including four home runs, along with 10 RBIs to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a pair of non-conference baseball wins on Saturday in Staunton. Currin had two homers and five RBIs during a 15-4 road win at Mary Baldwin University in game one, before slamming two more homers with five more RBIs during a 14-4 neutral-site win past Washington (MD) College in game two. Senior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) added three hits and two RBIs against the host Fighting Squirrels, and freshman Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) gained the pitching win for the visiting Tigers in the seven-inning contest. Junior Trent Jones (Virginia Beach) added three hits and five RBIs against the Shoremen, and sophomore Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) gained the pitching win.

In game one, H-SC scored 15 runs on 13 hits with one error … scoring six runs each in the third and fifth innings, one run in the sixth, and two runs in the seventh. MBU scored four runs on six hits with four errors … scoring three runs in the second inning, and one run in the fifth.

In the third, sophomores Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-1, 3 RBIs) and Grayson Harris (Moseley) each walked ahead of a single by classmate Ty Smith (Elizabethtown, TN) (2-5), and Masterson scored when Boyce (3-4, 2 RBIs) reached on a fielder's choice. Boyce then stole second base, before Harris scored when Currin (2-2, 5 RBIs) reached on a sacrifice fly that included a fielding error. Sophomore Christian Lancaster (Danville) (2-4, RBI) followed with an RBI single that plated Boyce ahead of a walk drawn by junior Lucas Burnette (Hurt). A run-scoring single by sophomore Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (1-3, RBI) scored Currin, Lancaster crossed the plate when senior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) (1-3, RBI) reached on another fielding error, and Burnette scored on a sacrifice fly by Masterson.

In the fifth, Burnette walked and later scored on a bases-loaded walk to Masterson, and Chambers, who reached on an error—crossed the plate on a ground ball double play. Beavers, who also singled, scored on an error by the catcher while Smith, who had also singled, was stealing second base—Smith crossed the plate on an RBI single by Boyce. Boyce crossed the plate ahead of Currin, who slammed a two-run home run.

In the sixth, freshman Mason Jablonski (Franklin, TN) (1-2) had a pinch-hit single and later scored courtesy of a run-scoring single by Masterson. In the seventh, Boyce walked, stole second base, and once-again scored ahead of Currin, who once-again belted a two-run home run.

Senior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) started on the mound and tossed the first 3.0 innings, allowing two hits and three runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and one walk. Miller-Bopp (1-0) pitched 2.0 innings in relief for the win, yielding three hits and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and one walk.

In game two, H-SC scored 14 runs on 15 hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the first inning, three runs in the fourth, one run in the fifth, two runs in the seventh, one run in the eighth and five runs in the ninth. WC scored four runs on seven hits with nine errors … scoring three runs in the second inning, and one run in the seventh.

In the first, Smith reached on a one-out error and scored ahead of Currin (3-6, 5 RBIs), who hit his third homer of the day with two outs. In the fourth, Boyce (2-4) singled, Currin reached on an error, and Lancaster (2-5) singled to load the bases with no outs. Boyce crossed the plate when Miller-Bopp (1-4, RBI) reached on an error, Currin scored when Burnette (1-6, RBI) reached via a fielder's choice, and Lancaster crossed the plate when Jones (3-6, 5 RBIs) reached on yet another error.

In the fifth, Currin reached on a fielder's choice and later scored courtesy of a wild pitch. In the seventh, Miller-Bopp drew a walk and later scored on an RBI single by Jones, and Burnette reached on an error and crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by Masterson (2-6, RBI). In the eighth, Currin singled and later scored on another RBI single by Jones.

In the ninth, Harris (1-4) doubled and Boyce walked with one out, before Currin added is fourth home run on the day—a three-run shot for the Tigers. Miller-Bopp was hit by a pitch with two outs, and Burnette singled, before Jones followed with a two-run that plated both Miller-Bopp and Burnette.

Freshman Jake Williams (Chesapeake) started on the mound and tossed the first 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs, all earned, with one strikeout and no walks. Gregory (1-0) pitched 4.1 scoreless innings in relief for the win, yielding just one hit with five strikeouts and no walks. Senior Tymothy Hart (Powhatan) tossed the final 1.0 scoreless inning, allowing no hits with three strikeouts and no walks—striking out each of the three batters he faced.

H-SC is scheduled to play a non-conference game on the road at Christopher Newport University on Tuesday, February 21, at 2 p.m. in Newport News. The Big Hitters Club and the Club of the Peninsula has scheduled a pre-game social and pep rally from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Smoke BBQ Restaurant in Newport News.
