MC Scores in Five of Final Six Frames

MARYVILLE – Maryville extended its undefeated start to the 2023 season with a 9-2 victory over Oglethorpe on Sunday at Scotland Yard.
 
Gabriel Lopez and Max Bowers each picked up three hits in the contest. Lopez recorded his first triple of the season in the fourth inning, recording an RBI on the play.
 
Mitchell Grannan got the start for the Scots, going 4 1/3 innings allowing two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out an MC season-high seven batters. He was relieved by Chris Arbuthnot (1-0) who pitched 3 2/3, scattering three hits and striking out three while earning his first win of the season.  
 
Maryville struck first in the third inning as Lopez scored on a fielder's choice by Zach Graham. Graham later scored in the inning following a deep sacrifice fly from Bowers.
 
MC scored at least one run in five of its final six trips to the plate.
 
The Stormy Petrels struck back in the top of the fourth as Drew Jabaley hit his first career home run to shorten the Scots lead to just 2-1.
 
Zach Fritts continued the Scots' scorching offense in the bottom of the fourth, picking up a single that allowed Hunter Thaxton to come around and score. Fritts later scored on Lopez's triple. In his first start of the season, Fritts went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk.    
 
The Scots picked up two more runs in the fifth inning, with Jimmy Meredith scoring on a wild pitch and Thaxton scoring on a throwing error.
 
Christian Carlton recorded a team-high two RBIs, scoring Jacob Johnston on a sacrifice fly in the sixth and then smacking a single through the right side to score Johnston again in the eighth. Carlton came around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning to make it 9-2.
 
The Scots have a mid-week contest against Berry on Tuesday before returning home for a three-game series against Hanover. First pitch for Tuesday's matchup is scheduled for 3 p.m.
