Baseball Strikes Out in Season Opener Doubleheader to Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. - The Stevenson Baseball team dropped both ends of its doubleheader to Marymount University on a chilly Saturday afternoon. 

Stevenson opened a 3-0 lead to start the first game but out scored 7-1 following the top of the third. After five scoreless innings, the Saints scored three in the sixth inning and kept the Mustangs scoreless. The Mustangs fall to 0-2 after the first weekend of play. 

Game One
Stevenson took an early lead in the top of the first when junior Nick Tamberino doubled to right field bringing graduate student Jonathan Brandt home. Soon after, graduate student Tommy Holcomb singled through the right side and brought home Tamberino to score the second run of the game. 

Junior Amani Jones got on base in the top of the second when he slapped a single through the right side and made it to second after graduate student Billy McAdam walked. 

The Mustangs scored again in the top of the third as senior Elliott Schilpp singled to right center allowing Holcomb to score.

The Saints found momentum in the bottom of the third, and Stevenson allowed the Saints to get three runs with three RBI. 

McAdam singled, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and finally scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth.

The Saints crept up on Stevenson again in the bottom of the fifth where they scored three runs. And then again, the Saints could score another in the bottom of the sixth after a sacrifice fly earning themselves a 7-4 victory. 

Game Two

Graduate Student Sam Downs pitched four scoreless innings, striking out six, for the Mustangs in his first start of the 2023 campaign.

Sophomore Brandon Perillo recorded the lone Mustang hit of the game in the sixth with a single to shallow center field. 

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Marymount drove in three runs on four hits. 

Sophomore Matt Kossey pitched the final two innings for the Mustangs, giving up one hit and notching three strikeouts. 

Up Next

The Mustangs will next take the field on February 24th at 2 p.m. as they host Arcadia for the first day of the Stevenson Invitational. The game with the Knight will also mark the inaugural game on the new Stevenson University's East Campus baseball field.
