NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) had a two-run single, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 11-2 non-conference baseball decision on the road at Christopher Newport University on Tuesday afternoon in Newport News. Freshman Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) took the pitching setback for the visiting Tigers (3-1) against the host Captains (6-0).

H-SC scored two runs on six hits with two errors … scoring the two runs in the seventh inning. CNU scored 11 runs on 12 hits with three errors … scoring five runs in the third inning, two runs in the fifth and four runs in the eighth.

In the seventh, sophomore Christian Lancaster (Danville) (1-4) singled with one out and classmate Christian Chambers (Midlothian) drew a two-out walk, before Beavers (1-3, 2 RBIs) followed with his two-run single to left center field.

Senior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) started on the mound for the Tigers, who used seven pitchers, and tossed the first 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Greer (0-1) pitched 1.0 inning and allowed five hits and five runs, four earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout and two walks. Senior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) also pitched 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with four strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC is scheduled to play a three-game series at home against non-conference opponent Franklin & Marshall (PA) College this weekend on February 25-26, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 12 p.m., before a single game on Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2:30 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
