HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior Tillman Butler (Culpepper) had two hits while knocking in two, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 6-3 non-conference home baseball win over William Peace (NC) University on Wednesday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Senior Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) drove in one on two hits for the Tigers (6-1), while sophomore Grayson Harris (Moseley) added a hit and RBI. Senior Ryan Portes (Midlothian) got the win in relief, throwing two innings, allowing one hit, and striking out one and senior Tymothy Hart (Powhatan) got the save, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

H-SC scored six runs on nine hits with three errors … scoring one run in the second, two in the third, and three in the fifth. William Peace scored three runs on five hits with one error … scoring two runs in the fourth and one run in the eighth.

In the second, Harris (1-3, RBI) started the inning off by being hit by a pitch, and quickly advanced to second base on a wild pitch. He was advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Christian Chambers (Midlothian). Harris came around to score on a sacrifice fly hit into foul territory in right field by junior Lucas Burnette (Hurt).

Sophomore Jahiem Green (Stafford) (1-2) started the third inning by beating out a ground ball to the third baseman. Sophomore Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (2-4) advanced Green to second with a hard base hit ground ball up the middle and were both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Boyce (2-3, RBI). Butler (2-3, 2 RBI) laced a single into the left-center gap to bring home both Green and Masterson to give H-SC a 3-0 lead.

After coming into the game as a replacement in the fifth inning, sophomore Ty Smith (Elizabethton, TN) started the bottom of the fifth by making it safely to first on an error. Masterson singled up the middle with Smith taking advantage and getting himself to third on the play. Boyce hit a slow chopper to the shortstop and was able to leg it out and bring home Smith with an RBI infield single. With Boyce on first and Masterson at second, Butler laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move them to second and third. After a strikeout, Harris chopped one to second and beat out the throw to allow Boyce to score, and with two outs Masterson hustled around third on the play to beat a throw home to make it 6-2 after five.

Much like their last match-up with the Pacers, the Tigers used nine different pitchers on the day, with four of the nine only throwing one inning. Senior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) got the start, throwing one inning and striking out two. Junior Jack Bourdon (Madison) threw one and one-third innings with two strikeouts and no hits allowed.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, March 3, when they travel down to Huntingdon (AL) College to play Millsaps (MS) College at the Huntingdon Spring Break Tournament. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Neal Posey Field in Montgomery, Alabama.
