Rutgers-Newark Baseball Extends Win Streak to Four With Sweep of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark baseball squad swept their non-conference doubleheader against St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn, 5-0 and 10-5. The pair of wins lift the Scarlet Raiders to 5-1 overall and extended their win streak to four in a row. The Bears fell to 0-2 on the year with the pair of losses.

Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 5, St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn 0 (7 inn.)

The Scarlet Raiders scattered seven hits as a team and played clean baseball in the field. Eric Recchia continues to put together an outstanding sophomore campaign as he finished 3-for-3 and an RBI in game one while his brother Paul Recchia finished with a pair of RBIs. Marcus James (2-0) picked up his second win of the season with a complete game shutout with five strikeouts. 

Rutgers-Newark opened their scoring ledger in the bottom of the first when Robert Gonzalez crossed the dish after reaching earlier on an infield single. James kept the Bears off of the scoreboard for the remainer of the game while the Scarlet Raiders' offense exploded in the bottom of the 6th. 

Gonzalez hit a lead-off triple and was promptly brought home by a triple from Eric RecchiaPaul Recchia hit a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Lebow after he entered the game to pinch run. Jon Rosado capped the scoring for the Scarlet Raiders with a 2 RBI single through the left side after hitting a walk off single just two days ago. 

Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 10, St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn 5

Daniel Reardon got the start on the mound for the Scarlet Raiders in game two and tallied three strikeouts while allowing four hits. Michael Weinbel and Gianmarco Acevedo each tallied two hits while Dario Morales paced the team with 3 RBIs. 

The Scarlet Raiders kept the momentum going from the end of game one and plated six runs to open the game. Gonzalez was the first to collect an RBI when he brought in Gilroy Prial with a double to right center before being brought home himself on an RBI from Eric Recchia. Morales then hit a single through the left side to bring in two runs to put the Scarlet Raiders up 4-0. Rutgers-Newark went through the order which put Prial back at the plate where he made the most of his opportunity and hit a 2 RBI single to right field.

St. Joseph's-Brooklyn scored their first run of the season in the 3rd before the Scarlet Raiders added three more to their tally in the bottom of the 4th. The Bears made one last push in the top of the 8th with four runs but were too far behind to complete the comeback.
