Baseball takes two from Highlanders

At the Plate

  • Cameron Day (Hagerstown, Md./Clear Spring) went 4-for-6 on the day with three extra base hits - two doubles and a home run. He drove in three and walked.
  • Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) finished the afternoon with two hits in game one. The first-year student had a double, an RBI, a stolen base and scored twice. 
  • Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) went 2-for-4 in game one, with a double and RBI and three stolen bases. 
  • Richard Kershow (Eatons Neck, N.Y./Northport) ended with two hits in the second game with a double and an RBI. 

On the Mound

  • Joe Alexander (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) started game two for the Blazers, allowing two runs on one hit in five innings of work. The senior tallied seven strikeouts and walked two to get the win.
  • Gavin Pollard (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) and Scott Ash (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) both threw no-hit innings to finish game two.
  • Declan Sullivan (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) started the opener, giving up five runs, three earned, on six hits in 5.2 innings. The first-year student struck out five and walked two to receive the win. 
  • Kevin Nelson Jr. shut the door for the Blazers, throwing a perfect 1.1 innings to receive the save. 

Hood 6, Cairn 5

  • In the first inning, Schwarzman singled, stole second and third and scored on a wild ptich for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Blazers received back-to-back doubles by Rhue and Schwarzman to up the lead to 2-0 in the third inning. 
  • Day led off the fourth with his first career home run to to push the Hood lead to 3-0. 
  • The Highlanders responded in the bottom half of the fourth with a Dylan Jackson two-run homer that pulled Cairn within a run 3-2.
  • In the sixth inning, Hood got the first two runners on, as Day doubled and Amrit Brown (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) walked. Jacob Saylor (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) moved them into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Day scored on a Monteleone sacrifice fly to center field, and Brown scored on a double steal to push the Blazers' lead to 5-2. Later in the inning, Rhue hit a two-out single that brought home Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) for a 6-2 lead. 
  • Cairn answered with runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning, Jared Sucro and Ben Spadea hit back-to-back singles. Sucro stole thirdand scored on a Jackson sacrifice fly. Zach Bauers walked with two outs and he and Spadea scored on a Greg Jessup double to deep center fieldto again pull the Highlanders within one run 6-5. Nelson Jr. entered the game and made Luke Weaver pop up to second base to stop the bleeding.  
  • In the seventh, Nelson Jr. retired Cairn to secure the win for the Blazers.   

Hood 6, Cairn 2

  • The Blazers again took the lead early in the first inning, Rhue walked and Schwarzman was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Alex Jenkins (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) sacrificed both runners ove, and Day came through again with a single through left side to knock in both runners for a 2-0 lead. 
  • In the second, Kershow hit a double to lead off and Monteleone bunted him to third. Kershow was out at home on a safety squeeze bunt, but Andrew Perkins (Fresno, Calif./Clovis North) reached base on the play. Perkins stole second and Reyna singled up the middle to bring home Perkins for a 3-0 lead. 
  • Cairn hit another two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning, this time by Tyler Warr, to pull them within one at 3-2. 
  • Alexander sat down the nine straight batters through the next three innings, to hold the Highlanders off the bases and scoreboard. 
  • The Blazers added a run in the fourth inning when Day led off with a double and later scored on a Kershow single up the middle for a 4-2 lead. 
  • Hood added two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings as both lead off batters were able to reach and later scored in those innings for a 6-2 lead. 

For the Opponent 

  • Jackson had three RBIs in game one with a two-run homer.
  • Warr had the only hit for the Highlanders in game two, by way of a two-run home run.
  • Spadea scored two times in game one. 
  • Jessup had a double and two RBIs in the opener. 

Notes

  • Hood improves to 5-2 on the year.  
  • Cairn falls to 0-3 on the year.
