WINCHESTER, Va. – In another instant classic between two longtime regional rivals, the second-ranked Salisbury University baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1, 10-inning decision to the ninth-ranked Shenandoah Hornets on Monday afternoon at Kevin Anderson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Neither side could break through in the first nine innings, with the Sea Gulls' Jimmy Adkins and the Hornets' Jacob Bell matching each other zero for zero in a classic pitchers' duel.
  • Shenandoah threatened to break through in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with a two-out double, hit batsman and infield single. Undeterred, Adkins got Pearce Bucher to hit a harmless groundout right back to him for the third out.
  • Salisbury put men on the corners in the sixth, seventh and eighth without breaking through. In the seventh, Danny Sheeler singled and moved to third on a sac bunt and Stephen Rice base hit. Scott Cameron came up next and lined out to second; as the second baseman threw to first to try and double up Rice, Sheeler broke for the plate but was thrown out to retire the side.
  • In the top of the 10th the Sea Gulls finally broke through. Dom Frigiola worked a one-out walk and Patrick Campbell came in to pinch-run, advancing to second on a botched pickoff. Two batters later, Cameron Hyder rolled a grounder up the middle. Second baseman Kyle Lisa slid to stop it from going to the outfield and fired home, but Campbell's sliding fingers touched the plate a split-second before the tag, and Hyder's RBI single gave Salisbury a long-awaited 1-0 lead.
  • Lisa led off the bottom of the 10th and was hit by a pitch. After a sac bunt, Kooper Anderson shot a triple down the right field line to score pinch-runner Tyler Blittersdorf with the tying run.
  • The Sea Gulls walked the next two batters intentionally to load the bases, then Colby Martin lifted a fly ball deep enough into center field to bring Anderson home with the winning run, setting off a wild celebration from the Hornet dugout.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Cameron Hyder finished 2-for-5 with the go-ahead RBI in the top of the 10th.
  • Danny Sheeler and Stephen Rice each had two hits.
  • Zach Adams (0-1) took the loss after surrendering the tying and winning runs in the bottom of the 10th.
  • Jimmy Adkins pitched eight shutout innings in a tough no-decision. Adkins scattered six hits with one walk and struck out eight on 106 pitches.
  • Robbie Hollenbeck tossed a scoreless ninth to push the game to extra innings.

SHENANDOAH GAME NOTES

  • Colby Martin finished 1-for-4 with the walkoff sacrifice fly in the 10th.
  • Frankie Ritter went 2-for-3 with a double and two walks.
