SALISBURY, Md. – A four-run seventh inning proved to be the undoing of the second-ranked Salisbury University baseball team in a 6-3 loss to the Ursinus Bears on Wednesday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bears put up the opening tally in the top of the first inning. Will Kelley led off with a base hit, then after a fielder's choice Solomon Griffith and Tom Snipes strung together back-to-back singles to put Ursinus up 1-0.
  • The Sea Gulls countered in the bottom of the third. Roman March singled to lead off and Dom Frigiola executed a perfect hit-and-run single to the right side to put men on the corners. Luke Weddell then laid down a squeeze bunt to bring home March to tie it. After a hit batsman and an error loaded the bases, Danny Sheeler gave SU a 2-1 lead with an RBI base hit to right.
  • Max Gadsden led off the top of the fifth with a walk and soon after stole second. After another walk and a groundout to advance the runners, Griffith rolled a single through the left side to score Gadsden and tie it 2-2.
  • In the home fifth, Weddell bounced a single up the middle to lead off and moved to second on a sac bunt. Two batters later Sheeler sliced a base hit into center, scoring Weddell to put SU back up 3-2.
  • The Bears seized control in the top of the seventh. Jordan Williams led off with a double and Griffith was plunked to put two men on. Snipes came up next and ripped a go-ahead two-run triple down the right field line. Snipes then scored on a suicide squeeze off the bat of Jared Minnichbach to make it 5-3 UC.
  • Ursinus tacked on another in the seventh on an RBI single by Jakob Cantor to boost the lead to 6-3.
  • SU had the beginnings of a rally going in the eighth as Scott Cameron doubled to lead off, but Bear reliever Casey Murphy retired the next three in a row to cut off any potential shift in momentum. Murphy then put up a zero in the ninth to finish the job.
