Baseball: Clutch Hitting Lifts Highlanders over Cabrini at Home

More news about: Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team won, 13-11, at home against non-conference adversary and NCAA Tournament contender Cabrini University inside the Stillman Complex on Tuesday evening, splitting the season series with the Diamond Cavs.

"This group is a very talented team - when we play together, there's hardly a team that can stop us." remarked Head Coach Brett Marks"Our record doesn't reflect that right now. There's no denying that we have gotten off to a slow start, but today's game just confirms to me that we are competitors. We played a great team and we didn't give in. Even when they rallied back hard against us, we stayed resilient. I'm extremely proud of our ability to dig in and come together as brothers."

Cairn (3-9) got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI-single by senior Sam Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury). After Cabrini (10-7) took a 2-1 lead in the second, the Highlanders answered with a four-spot in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double by sophomore Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy). The Diamond Cavs cut the deficit to one (5-4) with two runs in the sixth frame, before Cairn exploded with seven runs in the bottom half of the seventh. The Highlanders held a 13-5 lead entering the ninth inning, before Cabrini made a ferocious comeback, plating six runs (including a grand slam down the left-field line with no outs). However, graduate student Bryan Stimpson (Monroeville, NJ / Cornell University) came on in relief to get the final three outs and secure the victory for Cairn.

Five Highlanders earned multi-hit efforts at the plate, led by Warr with two hits, two runs and a team-high four RBIs. Freshman Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) added two hits and a team-high three runs, while Spadea, junior Jake Meisel (Newark, DE / Rosemont College) and sophomore Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) added a pair of base knocks. Cairn left just six of their 19 runners on base in the contest. Spadea got the start on the bump, hurling four innings and scattering three hits, two runs (none earned) to go along with three strikeouts. Sophomore Ronaldhino Alcin (Miami, FL / North Miami Beach) secured the win in relief after tossing four innings and striking out five Diamond Cavs.

The Highlanders will be back on the tomorrow when they welcome Penn State Schuylkill to Langhorne for a non-conference tilt inside the Stillman Complex at 3 p.m.
