Baseball Sees Four-Game Win Streak Ended in 2023 Road Debut at Amherst

Amherst, MA --- The WPI baseball team's four-game win streak was snapped by Amherst on the road on Tuesday, as the Mammoths pounded out 13 hits in an 8-4 win. The Engineers drop to 9-6 overall, while Amherst improves to 6-1-1 on the season. 

Amherst's Jack Dove (Norwalk, CT) was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Christian Fagnant (East Granby, CT) added two RBI with both players hitting homeruns in the game. On the mound, Naaveen Narayanan (Malvern, PA) notched his first win of the season, allowing two runs on six hits with eight K's in five innings of work. 

WPI's offense was led by Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, NY) who finished with two hits and two RBI, including his second homerun of the season. Andrew Cash (Marlboro, MA) and DJ Brooks (Danvers, MA) also added two hits each in the loss. 

Hand led off the game with a solo homerun, but the WPI lead was short-lived, as a pair of singles from Jack Sampedro (Miami, FL) and Ryan McIntyre (Larchmont, NY) set up an RBI fielder's choice from Luke Padian (Katonah, NY). 

Amherst took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. A Padian single was sent home on a Fagnant groundout, while Jackson Reydel's (Marion, MA) double set up an RBI double from Camden New (Kennebunkport, ME) that made it 3-1. 

The Mammoths pushed the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout from McIntyre that scored Sampedro, who led off the frame with a double. 

WPI closed the gap to 4-3 with one run each in the sixth and eighth innings. In the sixth, it was a Brooks single to score Cash, while in the eighth, Hand singled home a lead-off walk issued to Gavin George (Salem, NH). 

Amherst posted four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, using five hits to push the lead to 8-3. Padian singled and Reydel doubled before Dove launched a three-run homerun over the left-field fence. Fagnant made it back-to-back dingers with a solo shot to right for the Mammoth's eighth run of the game. 

In the top of the ninth, Kyle Johns (Milltown, NJ) walked to start the frame, while DeRoma reached on a fielder's choice. Burns then singled and Johns scored on an error to make it 8-4 with two on and no out. Amherst reliever Sampedro sat down the next three WPI batters in order to seal the victory. 

WPI finishes its tough three-day, three-game stretch tomorrow playing Worcester State at the New England Baseball Complex at 3:30pm. Amherst also plays tomorrow at 3:30pm, heading to Western New England University.
