HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) had three hits, including a three-run home run, with four RBIs, while freshman Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) added two hits and two RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 7-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) home baseball victory past archrival and nationally-ranked #13 Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Freshman Colton Harris (Stuarts Draft) gained the pitching win in middle relief for the host Tigers (10-8, 4-1) against the visiting Yellow Jackets (14-4, 3-2). It was the Garnet & Grey's first win against R-MC since April 18, 2018, an 8-1 home win against the Yellow Jackets.

H-SC scored seven runs on 13 hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first inning, four runs in the second, one run in the fourth and one run in the seventh. R-MC scored three runs on nine hits with two errors … scoring the three runs in the second inning

In the first, sophomore Grayson Harris (Moseley) (2-3) singled to left field to begin the at-bat, advanced to second base when Masterson (3-4, 4 RBIs) singled through the right side, and both runners moved up a base via a sacrifice bunt by senior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) (3-4, RBI). Miller-Bopp (2-5, 2 RBIs) plated G. Harris with his two-out, RBI single to left for the early 1-0 advantage.

The Yellow Jackets scored three runs on four hits in the top of the second for a 3-1 lead, getting a two-out, two-run double to center field by Logan Smith and a run-scoring single to center from Grayson Bush with two outs, as well.

In the second for the Tigers, junior Lucas Burnette (Hurt) (1-4) reached base on a throwing error with one out, while Harris walked with two outs. Masterson then slammed his second home run of the season, a no-doubt three-run blast over the fence in left field to make it a 4-3 advantage for the home team. Boyce followed with a double to left, before stealing third base after sophomore Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (2-4) was hit-by-a-pitch. Boyce scored on a two-out RBI single through the left side by Miller-Bopp for a 5-3 lead after two innings.

In the fourth, G. Harris singled to center field and stole second base with one out, and crossed the plate courtesy of a run-scoring single to right field by Boyce—making it a 6-3 lead.

In the seventh, Burnette singled to left field with one out before yielding to a pinch-runner, sophomore Jahiem Green (Stafford). Green advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by junior Trent Jones (Virginia Beach), and following a two-out walk to Harris, Green scored on an RBI single to right field by Masterson to provide for the final four-run margin of victory.

Freshman Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started on the mound and tossed the first 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. C. Harris (1-0) pitched 2.0 scoreless innings for his first collegiate mound win, yielding two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Senior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) retired the only batter he faced on a strikeout to close the top of the sixth. Sophomore Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) pitched a scoreless seventh, allowing one hit with no strikeouts and no walks. Senior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) tossed the final 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with three strikeouts and one walk. Tappy had pitched a complete-game, 9.0-inning shutout victory past Ferrum this past Sunday, March 19, while Woodall had pitched 6.0 scoreless innings during a win past Ferrum, as well.

H-SC will play on the road in non-conference action at Mary Baldwin University tomorrow, Thursday, March 23, at 2 p.m. in Staunton.
