MANSFIELD, Conn. – Cleanup hitter Dan Burnett had four hits and drove in two runs in Westfield State University's 16-hit attack as the Owls routed No. 2 nationally-ranked and defending national baseball champion Eastern Connecticut State University, 10-1, Wednesday evening at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.
The win for Westfield (4-6) is its most lopsided of its 11 victories in the all-time series against Eastern (11-2). Eight of the Owls' previous wins over Eastern were by one run.
Westfield had snapped a four-game losing streak Tuesday with a 5-1 triumph at Springfield College. The Warriors had won their last six and were coming off a 12-2 win over New England College Tuesday in their home-opener.
Burnett, who entered the game batting .212, was 4-for-5 and was one of four players to drive in two runs. No. 3 hitter Nick Marshall hit his team-leading fifth home run of the year to highlight Westfield's three-run first inning – one of three of his team's homers. Leading 5-1, the Owls tacked on three more in the sixth, the final two coming on Burnett's two-run, two-out single.
Junior righty Ryan Lapierre (2-1) scattered three hits over eight innings, fanning four and walking two.
Junior shortstop and leadoff hitter Zach Donahue (South Windsor) had two of Eastern's four hits and accounted for its run when he led off the first inning with his second home run of the season. He also doubled and reached on an error. Since opening the season 6-for-33, Donahue is 10-for-23 in his last five games. He was the only Eastern player with multiple hits.
Eastern visits Salve Regina University Thursday at 3 p.m. in a non-conference game before opening defense of its 2022 Little East Conference regular-season title when it hosts Plymouth State University Saturday at noon.
