CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University baseball team fired on all cylinders at the plate en route to a 35-6 win over the Washington College Shoremen on Thursday afternoon at Athey Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls got to work early and put up a crooked number in the top of the first inning. Cameron Hyder walked and Luke Weddell reached on a sac bunt-turned-error. After a strikeout and a walk, Ben Anderson hit a grounder that was too hot to handle at third, allowing two runs to score on an error to put SU on top 2-0.
  • Stephen Rice kept the line moving with an RBI fielder's choice and stole second. After another walk, Scott Cameron ripped a two-run double into the right field corner to make it 5-0.
  • The Shoremen answered with one in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Logan Yi singled and Drew Kinsey was hit by a pitch, then Elias Philiposian singled home Yi to get WAC within 5-1.
  • Salisbury tacked on two more in the second on an Anderson double to left center to make it 7-1.
  • The teams traded a run each in the third inning. Kavi Caster brought home a run for SU with an RBI groundout, then Yi went deep to right center for the Shoremen to make it 8-2.
  • In the fourth, Cameron blasted a two-run shot to right center, then two batters later Hyder lashed a line drive solo homer down the right field line to boost the lead to 11-2.
  • WAC got those three runs back in the fifth as Chase Ruppel tagged a three-run homer to left center to get it back to 11-5.
  • The Sea Gulls punched back with 13 in the sixth on a Cameron RBI double, Hyder RBI single, Weddell two-run single, wild pitch-plus-error, Rice two-run single, Jacob Ference sac fly, Andrew Kell RBI single, another Hyder RBI single and Caster RBI single to make it 24-5.
  • Salisbury tacked on five more in the seventh, highlighted by a no-doubt two-run dinger to left by Ference, that made it 29-5.
  • Run-scoring singles by Patrick Campbell and Weddell highlighted a five-run top of the eighth that put SU on top 34-5.
  • Luke Herz's RBI double in the bottom of the eighth brought the Shoremen within 34-6.
  • Zach Geesaman went yard to center in the ninth, giving the game its final 35-6 margin.
