NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders baseball program won their 6th straight this afternoon after taking down Muhlenberg 2-1 in both games at Weequahic Park. Rutgers-Newark improved to 13-4 with the pair of wins and Muhlenberg fell to 7-9-1.
Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 2, Muhlenberg 1
Gilroy Prial went 2-for-3 in game one and Matthew Rypkema finished 1-for-3 with the lone RBI. On the bump, Colin Thomson hurled 6.2 innings of action, however, it was Vince Taylor (3-1) who earned the decision with three pitches.
Muhlenberg scored via a sacrifice fly in the opening stanza of the game before having their offense shut down for the remainder of the contest. The Scarlet Raiders evened play up in the bottom of the 4th when Robert Gonzalez reached first on a fielding error. Paul Recchia then moved Gonzalez over to 2nd with a sacrifice bunt, setting up Rypkema to bring him home with an RBI single to left field.
The Scarlet Raiders plated their game-winning run in the bottom of the 7th. Reid Duffus would reach after he was hit by a pitch before Armando Alvarez laid down a bunt that resulted in an error, allowing Duffus to round the bases for the game-winning run.
Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 2, Muhlenberg 1
In game two Prial continue to bring the hot bat to the plate and finished 3-for-4 with an RBI while Alvarez finished 2-for-3. Marcus James pitched six innings and allowed three hits and one run with two strikeouts before giving way to Daniel Reardon (2-0) who pitched two innings and allowed just one hit. Picking up the save was closer Vince Taylor.
The Mules were first to the scoreboard once again, plating the game's first run in the top of the 5th. Rutgers-Newark responded with a run in the bottom of the next frame behind Rypkema once again. Gonzalez once again reached on an error and was brought home by Rypkema's RBI double.
Just one inning later, the Scarlet Raiders struck again for what would turn out to be the game-winning run. Calvin Claiborne pinch-ran for Alvarez who reached via a single through the left side. Jon Rosado then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Claiborne into scoring position. Prial took advantage of the situation and hit an RBI single to center field to keep the Scarlet Raiders' win streak alive.
