Myers Sparks #10 RMC Baseball in Win over HSC

ASHLAND, Va. – Junior Matt Myers (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) reached base five times and scored three runs as the 10th-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team used a nine-run sixth to secure a 15-7 ODAC win over Hampden-Sydney on Tuesday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Tigers scored one in the top of the first before the Yellow Jackets answered in the bottom of the frame. Myers had a leadoff single, went to second on a balk, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) to level the score at 1-1.
  • HSC put up three in the top of the second. Junior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a leadoff single in the bottom of the second, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a base hit by sophomore Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) and scored on a groundout by senior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) to make it 4-2.
  • Myers started the third with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Webb to pull RMC within one at 4-3.
  • Senior Logan Smith (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) had a leadoff double in the fourth and came home on a sacrifice fly by Myers to tie the game at 4-4.
  • The Yellow Jackets took their first lead in the fifth. Senior Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) had a one-out single, took second on a wild pitch, went to third on a base hit by Webb and scored on a single by Lautenschlager to put RMC up 5-4. A sacrifice fly by Smith plated Webb, giving the home team a 6-4 edge.
  • HSC reclaimed the lead with three in the top of the sixth at 7-6. RMC had its first nine hitters reach base and score in the bottom of the sixth. Myers singled and scored when senior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) belted a homer to left, his sixth of the season, to put the Yellow Jackets on top for good at 8-7. Schmitt doubled and scored on a single by Cole. Webb and Lautenschlager walked to load the bases. Smith and Johnson drew bases-loaded walks to make it 11-7. Junior Greyson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) had a two-run single to increase the lead to 13-7. Johnson scored on a double play and Bush came in on a single by Schmitt to push the advantage to 15-7.
  • Sophomore Sam Slevin (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank Cox) fanned two of the three hitters he faced in the sixth, leaving the sacks full of Tigers. Slevin picked up the win to make his record 1-0.
  • Sophomore Bere Bauers (Devon, Pa./Devon Prep) pitched the final three innings without allowing a run in recording his second save. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out seven.
  • Junior Jacob Lawler (Broad Run, Va./Battlefield) pitched two scoreless innings in relief with two strikeouts.
