STORM LAKE, Iowa (April 14, 2023) - The Buena Vista baseball team scored 23 more runs during Friday night's doubleheader against Coe College and ran its current win streak to eight with 12-2 (8 innings) and 11-6 victories.

BVU scored in each of the first four innings of game one, including a five-run third inning to build a 10-0 lead. Sophomore Evan Taylor got the scoring started in the first with a solo home run to dead center before a balk made it 2-0 in the second.  A second balk led to the first run of the big third inning as BVU plated five runs on five hits in the frame.

Caden Mathewson singled home a run in the fourth before Tegan Bock added a 2-run single of his own to give BVU a 10-run advantage. The Kohawks got a pair of RBI singles in the fifth, but that was all they could push across offensively, as Morgan Smith limited them to just eight hits in the contest.

Joel Garcia doubled home Caden Mathewson in the eighth before Evan Taylor came through with a walk-off RBI single back up the middle, giving the Beavers their third straight mercy-rule victory.

Both Jordan and Caden Mathewson finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored. Caden chipped in with two RBI while Jordan added one. Evan Taylor finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored while Bock joined Calvin Harris and Logan Mueller with two hits. As a team, the Beavers pounded out 17 overall and stranded 12 runners.  Smith was in control from the opening pitch on the mound, going the distance to improve to 6-1 on the season. The right hander did not walk a batter and struck out seven overall.

The offense picked up right where it left off to begin game two, scoring three times in the bottom of the first. The Kohawks took advantage of a throwing error with two outs in the third to score two runs to cap a three-run inning and tie the game at 3-3.  Senior Grant Oseka got those two runs back for the Beavers in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home blast to left center field that gave the team the lead back for good. The home run was his second of the season and the team's 23rd overall.  The Beavers would then go on to tack on two runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to build an 11-3 cushion going into the ninth.

Brayden Polzein got the first two outs of the inning but then walked the bases loaded, hit one batter and allowed a two-run sinlge that brought the Kohawks within 11-6. The right hander buckled down, however, and recorded a strikeout to end the game, sending BVU to the sweep.

Caden Mathewson added three more hits to his total as did Harris. Jordan Mathewson had his 12-game hitting streak snapped, but did walk twice and finished 0-for-2.  BVU tallied 14 more hits with four going for extra bases.

Dalton Glenn got the start and pitched the first seven innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on just five hits. He walked two batters and struck out four. The right hander remains perfect on the year at 5-0.

Buena Vista improves to 23-5 on the year (14-1 A-R-C) and is now tied in the loss column for first place in the American Rivers Conference standings with Luther College.  BVU and Coe will wrap up the series with a quick turnaround on Saturday with first pitch set for 9:30 a.m. as the two teams try and beat some inclement weather set to move through the area over the weekend.
