SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University baseball team opened Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) play with a wild 12-10 win over the Mary Washington Eagles, its 12th straight, on Sunday afternoon at Donnie Williams Sea Gull Baseball Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls put up their first digit in the bottom of the first inning. Luke Weddell and Kavi Caster snuck one-out singles through the right side to put men on the corners, then Danny Sheeler lifted a sac fly out to center to plate Weddell and get SU on the board, 1-0.
  • The Eagles answered in a big way in the top of the third. With two out and two on after a walk and hit batsman, Jonathan Sedmak pegged a three-run home run to right, putting UMW on top 3-1.
  • In the bottom of the third, Weddell legged out an infield single with one out and took second on a groundout. Sheeler then bounced a base hit up the middle to bring around Weddell and bring the Sea Gulls within 3-2.
  • Salisbury kept the momentum rolling in the fourth. Scott Cameron led off with a double and took third on a sac bunt. Cameron Hyder then bounced a fielder's choice to first and Cameron beat the throw home to tie the game. Weddell came up next and clubbed a two-run homer to right, putting SU back on top 5-3.
  • In the top of the fifth, Xavier Herring tagged a two-out single into right, stole second and came home on a Jacob Christenbury RBI base knock to bring the Eagles within 5-4.
  • Hyder sparked an SU rally with a single to lead off the sixth. After a sac bunt, walk to Caster and wild pitch put men on second and third, Sheeler ripped a two-run double down the right field line to boost the Sea Gull cushion to 7-4.
  • UMW clawed one back in the top of the seventh as Ryan Schwarz led off with a single and eventually scored on an Andrew Gerhart RBI groundout to make it 7-5.
  • Jacob Ference belted a solo dinger to right to lead off the seventh, then after a walk, sac bunt-turned-error and passed ball, Hyder and Weddell brought home a run each on two RBI groundouts. Caster restarted the rally with a two-out single, took second on an error and scored on a Sheeler base knock to put Salisbury ahead 11-5.
  • Sedmak singled with one out in the top of the eighth, then two batters later Ty Lowe belted a two-run shot to right center to cut the Eagle deficit to 11-7.
  • Salisbury got one back in the home eighth. With men on first and second and one out, Hyder rolled an RBI single up the middle to make it 12-7.
  • UMW refused to go quietly in the top of the ninth. Schwarz led off with a double and Luke Guerzon singled him home. After a walk and a flyout, Guerzon came home on a Christenbury sac fly, then Sedmak ripped an RBI double to bring the Eagles with 12-10.
