FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's pitching staff allowed just three total runs in 14 innings as the baseball team split a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader with visiting York (Pa.). The Blazers won game one 3-1 before the Spartans salvaged split with a 2-1 win in the nightcap.

On the Mound

  • Joe Alexander (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) threw his second complete game in a row for the win in the opener. The senior scattered four hits and two walks, striking out seven and allowing one run.
  • Game two starter Aaron Heller (Philadelphia, Pa./Jack Barrack Hebrew Acad.) was charged with just one run on four hits in five innings, striking out three in a no-decision.
  • Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) took the loss in 0.1 innings of relief, surrendering one run. Declan Sullivan (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out one.

At the Plate

  • Stephen Sommer (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun) used a two-hit game two to finish the afternoon 3-for-6 with a double and two runs scored.
  • Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest) had an RBI in each game.

Hood 3, York 1

  • The Blazers scored twice in the second to take the lead. Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) started the inning with a walk and moved to third on Sommer's double. Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) gave Hood a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly that scored Reyna. Patterson followed with an RBI single for a two-run lead.
  • Alexander, meanwhile, was perfect into the fifth inning when Jake Deimling gave the Spartans their first baserunner of the day with a one-out single. Hood's senior righty struck out seven of the first 13 batters he faced.
  • York cut the Blazers' lead in half in the sixth when Lucas Prendergast singled and scored on a base hit by Michael Tinneny to make it 2-1.
  • Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) singled to lead off Hood's half of the sixth and scored on an RBI single by Reyna to give the Blazers some insurance.
  • A two-out single by Prendergast in the top of the seventh brought the tying run to the plate, but Alexander got Emidio Bucci to line out to Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) in center for the game's final out.

York 2, Hood 1

  • Both teams scored once in the second inning. Deimling doubled to lead off the Spartans' half. With two outs and Deimling on third, Prendergast hit a line drive off the glove the Heller for a single, driving in Deimling for a 1-0 lead.
  • Hood answered back in the bottom of the second. Sommer started the inning with a single and, after a one-out single by Schwarzman, ended up on third with one out. Patterson hit a long foul ball down the line in left for a sacrifice fly to tie the game.
  • Heller retired the Spartans in order over the next two innings and the Blazers threatened in the fourth. Richard Kershow (Eatons Neck, N.Y./Northport) was hit by a pitch and Sommer singled off the pitcher's leg to put two on. After Reyna bunted the runners to second and third, Schwarzman tried to squeeze Kershow home. Spartans' pitcher Bryce Shaffer dropped the popped-up bunt, but it rolled to catcher Emidio Bucci, who put the tag down for the second out. Shaffer then induced a groundout to end the threat.
  • York broke through in the sixth against Hood's bullpen. Sawyers faced the first two hitters, walking Robby Elzinga. Sullivan came on to replace Sawyers after a wild pitch and a sacrifice advanced Elzinga to third. Tinneny greeted him with an RBI single up the middle for a 2-1 lead. An Andrew Santarpia base hit and a wild pitch resulted in runners on second and third with one out. Sullivan escaped the jam with a pop up for the second out before getting Brendan Martin looking to end the inning.

For the Opponent

  • Schaffer got the win in game two, pitching the first six innings. He allowed one run on three hits, two walks and two hit batsmen. Ethan Kennedy tossed a 1-2-3 seventh for the save.
  • Brandon Purdy took the loss in the opener, giving up three runs on five hits and four walks in 5.2 innings.
  • Prendergast and Tinneny had three hits apiece on the day for the Spartans.

Notes

  • Hood ended the doubleheader 14-16 overall and 8-10 in the MAC Commonwealth.
