ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Ethan Iannuzzi (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) went 3 for 3, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch, stole four bases, and scored three runs as the sixth-ranked Randolph-Macon baseball team dropped an 8-5 decision to Mary Washington on Thursday afternoon.

How It Happened

  • The Yellow Jackets started the scoring in the second. Senior Carter Johnson (Southampton, Va./Southampton) had a two-out single, went to second on a passed ball and scored on a double by junior Grayson Bush (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) to make it 1-0.
  • After the Eagles plated a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third, RMC answered in the bottom of the frame. Iannuzzi had a leadoff single, stole second and went to third on an errant throw to second. Freshman Carter Schmitt (Glen Allen, Va./St. Christopher's) and senior Hunter Cole (Norfolk, Va./Granby) drew walks to load the bases. Iannuzzi scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Myles Webb (Norfolk, Va./Granby) and Schmitt came home on a wild pitch as the Yellow Jackets took a 3-2 edge.
  • Johnson had a leadoff double in the fourth, was sacrificed to third by Bush and scored on a single by Iannuzzi as RMC took a 4-2 lead.
  • Senior Devin Miles (Moseley, Va./Cosby) tossed three scoreless innings in relief with four hits, no walks and two strikeouts.
  • UMW scored two in the seventh, two in the eighth and two in the ninth to go up 8-4. Iannuzzi drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth and scored on a single by sophomore Aaron Lautenschlager (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) to make the final 8-5.

  • Iannuzzi went 3 for 3 with four stolen bases, two runs and one RBI. He now has 17 multi-hit games, the top total on the team.
  • Johnson had two hits and two runs. He extended his on-base streak to 18 games.
