Dutchmen Baseball Powers Way to Series Opening Win at York

More news about: Lebanon Valley

YORK, Pa. – Left fielder Dave Mangold helped lead the Lebanon Valley College baseball team's offensive showcase on Friday, launching a pair of home runs in the club's 15-1 victory against York College of Pennsylvania at Jaquet Field.

Lebanon Valley's lineup put on a hitting clinic, scoring 15 runs on 18 hits. The Dutchmen (19-14-1, 15-4 MAC Commonwealth) got contributions from several players, as a total of 10 LVC batters drove in runs and four hit homers. While the offense was the story of the day, starting pitcher Tommy Moore Jr. was equally as impressive on the mound. The right-hander struck out six Spartans (17-15, 12-7 MAC Commonwealth) in eight innings of work.

The Flying Dutchmen didn't waste any time getting the bats rolling, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After right fielder Pete Botbyl led off the game with a single, shortstop Nico Santoro promptly drove a two-run homer over the left field fence to open the scoring. Later in the frame, Mangold left the yard with a two-run blast of his own. The senior's third home run of the year was also deposited over the left field wall and brought home Shane Stossel in the process.

Lebanon Valley continued its productive afternoon in the batter's box in the top of the second, extending its lead to 5-0 against York. Botbyl hit the club's third long ball of the day by powering an opposite-field solo home run to left field.

The clubs then traded zeros until the top of the fifth inning, when LVC extended its advantage to 11-0 by scoring six runs with two outs. Stossel started things by crossing the plate on a wild pitch. Mangold then went yard for the second time in the contest, crushing a two-run homer to left field to plate Conor Smith. Later in the inning, Murphy lined a ground ball that deflected off the glove of the shortstop before rolling into center field, allowing Andrew Miles and Logan Brewer to score on the fielding error. The inning was capped off by Santoro driving a double down the right field line, plating Ryan Murphy.

The Dutchmen added some insurance runs in the top of the eighth, taking a 14-0 lead over the Spartans. Miles hammered a three-run blast that landed beyond the left field fence, scoring Smith and Brewer. York then got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the frame, trimming its deficit to 14-1 on a throwing error.

LVC tacked on another run in the ninth inning, as Duncan Weir extended the club's lead to 15-1 by scoring on a wild pitch. This would stand as the final score, as Brandon Crews threw a scoreless ninth inning.
