WORCESTER -- Owen Radcliffe (Holliston, MA) pitched a three-hit shutout in game two, as the WPI baseball team worked a split against NEWMAC rival Coast Guard on Saturday afternoon at Clark's Granger Field. The Bears (13-14, 6-6 NEWMAC) took game one, 6-4, before the Engineers (14-18, 3-9 NEWMAC) rebounded with a 5-0 win in game two.

Radcliffe threw eight scoreless innings in game two, allowing three hits with four strikeouts to even his record to 3-3. Noah Pins (Holden, MA) came on in relief and threw one scoreless, hitless inning. At the plate for WPI, Kyle Johns (Milltown, NJ) finished the day with four total hits, while Jeffrey Brennan (Amsterdam, NY) and Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, NJ) each added three. Jack Zawacki (Pittsford, NY) drove in a pair of runs for the Engineers.

For Coast Guard, John Thigpen (Tuscaloosa, AL) got the win in game one, throwing six innings, allowing two runs on four hits with seven K's to move to 2-2. Raymond Priddy (Chico, CA) got the save, his fourth of the year, going three innings, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts. At the plate, Parker Madden (Ruston, LA) had three hits in game one with a pair of RBI, while Blake Carroll (Land O'Lakes, FL) had two hits and scored two runs.

Game One

Coast Guard jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and didn't trail in the game one win. A late rally from WPI closed the gap to 6-4, but the Bears held on for the victory.

In the top of the first, Carroll led off the game with a single through the left side, setting up a two-run shot from Richard Barkley (Bellevue, WA) to make it 2-0. Coast Guard made it 3-0 two batters later as Madden doubled down the left field line to score John Carroll (Yardley, PA).

Both teams' bats went quiet until the top of the fourth when Coast Guard extended its advantage to 4-0. Madden opened the inning with a double and was sent home on a Charles Red (Panama City, FL) single.

WPI got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Hand got the Engineers first hit of the game before a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. An RBI ground-out from Zawacki plated a run before a strikeout ended the threat.

Coast Guard tacked on a run in the top of the fifth using a two-out rally. Jack Steel (Medford Lakes, NJ) started it was a double down the left field line and he was sent home on a double from Madden to make it 5-1.

WPI plated another run in the bottom of the sixth as a lead-off single from Brennan scored on a wild pitch, but Coast Guard answered with a Carroll solo homerun to push it to 6-2.

One last WPI rally saw the Engineers close the gap to 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, a pair of walks to Burns and Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, NY) both came around to score on a Johns single through the left side.

From there, Coast Guard's Priddy closed it out, not allowing a hit the rest of the way to wrap up the win.

WPI's Everett Wonson (Wenham, MA) suffered the game-one loss, throwing seven innings, allowing six runs on nine hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Game Two

A Radcliffe gem on the mound and RBIs from four different players pushed the Engineers to a 5-0 win in game two to salvage the split.

WPI got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Engineers loaded the bases with one out on a Johns single, a Zawacki walk, and a DeRoma fielder's choice. An infield single from Gavin George (Salem, NH) scored the first run, while a sac fly off the bat of DJ Brooks (Danvers, MA) made it 2-0.

The Engineers pushed it to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth on a solo shot from Burns, his second of the season.

Two insurance runs for WPI came in the bottom of the seventh, as a Zawacki single plated Brennan, and DeRoma worked a bases-loaded walk to push it to 5-0.

Radcliffe and Pins then went back to work, each tossing a scoreless inning to close out the game for the Engineers.

Harrison Milbert (Kingston, MA) was on the hill for Coast Guard in game two, going five and two-thirds, allowing two earned runs on nine hits in the loss.

The teams will play Friday's rescheduled game on Monday afternoon in New London beginning at 3:30pm.
