Carson strikes out 10 in 5-0 win over Oberlin

MARIETTA, Ohio — No. 14 ranked Marietta College shutout Oberlin College, 5-0, Wednesday (April 26) afternoon in nonconference baseball action at Pioneer Park. The Etta Express improves to 26-9 on the season, while Oberlin falls to 9-18 overall.

Senior Brett Carson 3-2) had a dominating performance on the mound for the Pioneers. Carson threw 7.0 shutout innings and gave up just one infield single with one walk and 10 strikeouts. Forrest Havanis worked the final 2.0 innings and allowed one hit and one walk with one strikeout. The Pioneers did not allow an Oberlin runner to get past first base in the game.

Nick Bonnizzio got the Pioneers on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Bonnizzio led off with a triple to right center and then scampered home when the Oberlin catcher tried to pick him off and threw the ball into the outfield.

Two more Oberlin errors led to another Marietta run in the second inning. Austin Amburgey reached on a fielding error by the Yeomen shortstop. Following a strikeout, Zach Marzetz grounded to the shortstop. Amburgey was put out at second, but the throw to first for the double play was wild allowing Marzetz to move over to second base.

Matthew Busby walked and Bonnizzio reached on an infield single loading the bases. Carson worked a base on balls driving in Marzetz for a 2-0 Pioneer lead.

Oberlin starter Jay Aghanya (2-3) threw 4.0 strong innings. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits. Aghanya walked three and struck out five. Ty Weatherspoon took over to start the fifth inning and gave up three runs on five hits in 4.0 innings. He struck out three.

Marietta rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth pushing the lead to 5-0. Ty Davis reached on a one-out double and moved to third on a bunt single from Trent Valentine. Cole Yeager followed with a single through the left side of the infield scoring Davis.

A wild pitch moved Valentine to third and Yeager to second. Ben Kaplin lined a double to the wall in left center scoring both Valentine and Yeager.

Bonnizzio, Davis and Yeager each had two hits in the game for the Pioneers.

Marietta hosts Heidelberg on Saturday (April 29). The OAC doubleheader is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
