GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Henry Jamieson stole his 24th base of the season to set a new Bates baseball record and the Bobcats defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 6-5 Wednesday night.

It's the first win for Bates (16-12) over USM (12-17) in baseball since 1988, snapping a 31-game losing streak against Hall of Fame skipper Ed Flaherty's squad.

The Bobcats scored two runs in the seventh inning to take the lead for good. With the score tied at four, sophomore Brandon Biggane (Rensselaer, N.Y.) got the offense going with a one-out single in the top of the seventh, advancing to second on a USM error. Senior captain John Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) doubled in Biggane, putting Bates up 5-4. Sophomore Joe Bianchi (Scituate, Mass.) got hit by a pitch and a ground out moved both runners up 90 feet.

Bates got an insurance run thanks to senior Drew Fallon (Mansfield, Mass.) singling through the right side to score Bianchi. Nowak got thrown out at the plate to end the inning, but Bates had a 6-4 lead.

Junior Corbin McAlpine (Boxborough, Mass.) was brilliant out of the bullpen, tossing six and a third innings of one-run ball. Given the lead in the top of the seventh, he shut down USM in the bottom half of the frame and in the eighth inning as well, when he snagged a line drive with a man on first and doubled off the runner to send the game to the ninth with Bates still up 6-4.

McAlpine (3-0) got the first batter he faced out in the ninth and the Bobcats brought in sophomore Ian McAslan (Baltimore, Md.) to close the game out. The Huskies were able to push across a run on a Jason Komulainen RBI single but McAslan secured his first save of the season when he got Arlo Pike to fly out to left to end the game, as the Huskies left two runners stranded.

Bates got on the board first on Wednesday when the Bobcats plated a run in the top of the second. Jamieson (St. Simons Island, Ga.) singled down the left field line to start the frame and one out later Nowak got hit by a pitch. Then the Bobcats pulled off a double steal, giving Jamieson his record-breaking swipe. He surpassed Steve Mrowka '88, who set the previous Bates single-season record of 23 stolen bases in 1984.

Bianchi drew a walk to load the bases and sophomore Ben Genser (Newton, Mass.) singled home Jamieson for a 1-0 Bates lead.

The Huskies answered with three runs in the bottom of the second. Brogan Searle-Belanger walked and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Anthony Poole singled him home, tying the game at one. With two outs, Poole stole second and Tom Vesosky singled him in for a 2-1 USM lead. Cam Seymour singled Vesosky to third and a passed ball eventually allowed the third run of the frame to score. Bates starting pitcher Teddie Nelson (Marshfield, Mass.) got out of further trouble by striking out Komulainen to end the inning.

Down by two, the Bobcats got to USM starter Gavin Rawstrom in the top of fhe fifth. Junior Jack Brennan (West Hartford, Conn.) singled up the middle to start the frame and junior Christopher Cimino (Scarborough, Maine) singled him to second. Senior captain Tyler Attal (Los Angeles) followed with a single to right, scoring Brennan. An errant throw moved Brennan to third and Attal to second. Jamieson tied the game with an RBI single to right, plating Cimino. Biggane got hit by a pitch, chasing Rawstrom from the game. Relief pitcher Owen Sullivan (0-2) struck out the first batter he faced, but he hit Bianchi with a pitch, forcing in a run and putting Bates up 4-3.

USM's only run against McAlpine came in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Poole singled to right field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Vesosky singled him home, tying the game at four.

The Bobcats immediately answered in the seventh and held on from there for the history-making win.

Jamieson paced the offense, going 3-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Every Bates position player recorded a hit, with the Bobcats tallying 11 on the evening.

Vesosky led the Huskies, finishing 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. USM recorded nine hits, all of them singles.

The Bobcats return to NESCAC action this Friday at 3pm when they host Bowdoin at Leahey Field.
