UNION, NJ - Zach Grace struck out a career-high 14 batters and threw his second complete game shutout of the season and Pat Defeciani hit a grand slam as #19 Rowan rolled to an 11-0 win over William Paterson in the NJAC Baseball Championship at Kean University. The Profs (30-11) remain in the winners bracket and will play TCNJ on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
In addition to Defeciani's grand slam, the first of his career, Ryan Murphy also hit a solo home run and Tyler Cannon came through with a two-run shot. Defeciani finished the game with five RBI while Cannon had two hits and two RBI.
Willilam Paterson got one hit in the first inning, but then Grace kept them off the bases through the sixth. Rowan took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Jason Morgan had reached base with a single and advanced to third after a failed pickoff attempt and error, was able to score when Defeciani grounded out.
Rowan upped the lead to 2-0 when Murphy hit a solo shot over the left-field fence in the sixth, but the Profs did all of their damage in the seventh. Chris Curcio reached base on an error and scored on Cannon's shot to center field, his second homer of the year. Anthony Schooley singled and moved over Phil Sedalis, who had walked, and then Dylan Maria drove in Sedalis with a single. Morgan reached on an error and then Murphy was intentionally walked, loading the bases for Defeciani, who sent the pitch over the fence in right center, giving Rowan a 10-0 lead.
The Profs added one more in the eighth when Schooley's sacrifice fly scored Cannon and Grace was able to finish out the game for his second complete game of the year.
With the loss, William Paterson was eliminated and there are four teams remaining in the conference championship.
